yet another 'what are my chances at the UCs'

Right now I'm looking at UCSD, UCLA, UCI, UCSB, UCSC, UCR, Cal Poly SLO and CP Pomona, CSULB, Santa Clara U.
SAT: 1230 (550 v, 680 m)
SAT II: 530 math ic
640 Spanish
560 writing (i was sick, and my family doesnt have the money so that i can retake it)
UC GPA is only 3.6
rank is 55/607 (i know the UCs dont care about that, but at least i'm in the top 10% with only a 3.6!)
taken 6 AP classes out of 10 offered
Marching band- 3 years
Symphonic Winds-4 years
Jazz Band- 1 year
Governor's Scholar Award for STAR testing
Volunteered 100 hours at hospital
and over 200 with Surfrider Foundation

My counselor told me I had a good chance of getting into UCSD back when I only had a 1080 SAT. Isn't that weird? Also, my friend from band got into UCSB last year with only a 910 SAT and 3.0 GPA. I think a lot of lazy and/or stupid people from our school get into the UCs. I looked at the UCSD site the other day and it said that in 2003, the average SAT for Mexicans admitted was only 1100, and the GPA was only 3.8. The Mexican students admitted by UCLA in 2002 had the same SAT score, but with a 4.0 GPA. I guess that's just because a lot of Mexicans are poor and most of our parents didn't even attend high school. But it definitely makes me feel a lot better, even though my GPA is still below average. Can anybody tell me my matches, safeties, and reaches?

lol, sometimes I wish I was a cali resident...get to go to awesome schools like UC-Berkley and UCSD.. :\
But, I think since you're instate, I don't think it'll be that hard. But, you might not get some of those scholarships. Maybe because you're a minority, those chances will go up, but hey, what do I know. I'm not the adcom :P.
UCSD - Match
UCLA - Match
I have no clue about the rest.

bump..............

I think you'll a good chance at UCLA because you're a california resident.

ucb: far reach
ucla: far reach
ucsd: far reach
ucsb: reach
uci: reach
ucsc: match
ucr: match
ucm:safety

newpswahine:

UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCSB: Match
UCI: Match
UCSC: Safe Match
UCR: Safe Match

Cal Poly SLO: Safe Match
Cal Poly Pomona: Safe Match
CSULB: Safety
Santa Clara: Safety (?)

My take:
UCLA reach
UCSD reach
UCSB match/reach
UCI match
UCSC safety/match
UCR safety
Cal Poly SLO - match/reach
Cal Poly Pomona - safety
Long Beach - match
Santa Clara - match

Remember, the Uc's and cal states DO NOT take minority status into consideration when making admissions decisions. They will look at factors such as family income, challenges you've overcome, extracurriculars, etc.

Carolyn,

I just wanted to let you know after doing research at UCLA with a Professor, Comprehensive Review does take minority status into consideration. It is not highly publicized after Prop 209 and SP-1 however after careful statistical review and inside research I believe it is a large consideration. 25-50% of the class is saved under Comprehensive Review. This can be used for anyone who "adds diversity" to the class. A large portion admitted under this percentage are minorities with average incomes and few challenges.

When it comes down to it, considering everything equal (gpa, income, status, challenges, course selection ect) a minority will receive preference.

For Newpswahine-

It is very very odd that your counselor told you that you had a good chance of getting into UCSD with a 1080. Are you a minority? Disadvantaged in anyway?

Your GPA is less than stellar. Your SAT is decent. Good extras and volunteer work.

I would say that purely based on your merits these are your chances (if you are a minority or from a disadvantaged background, your chances at each school should be much greater):

UCSD-reach
UCLA- reach
UCI-probably
UCSC-probably
UCR-safety
Cal Poly- Probably
CP Pomona-probably
CSULB- safety
Santa Clara U- probably

Don't you find it somewhat sad that the average SAT for Mexicans is much lower than it is for other racial groups, even groups who entered the US with the same disadvantages as the Mexicans (like the Asians, Irish). Also note that other racial groups who are poor and whose parents did not go to college have a higher GPA and SAT score range.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck! If you need any help or have any questions about UCLA or CAL, give me a call. Was accepted to both years ago.

mexicans dont work as hard in general. asians generally are vert diligent. its a cultural thing i guess.

does anybody else have anything to say?
and will putting biology as my major make it any harder to get accepted? i know its hard for engineering, but bio too?

Sleepisabliss, when you said that Mexicans don’t work hard in general that was probably the stupidest thing I’ve ever read on CC and I have read some stupid things on this site. It is apparent you have no idea what it is like to do the jobs that Mexicans often do for meager pay. While I am not going to put any race, nationality, or type of people down just to argue with you, I will say that Mexicans arguably work AT LEAST as hard as any other group. I really wish I didn’t have to waste my time responding to you but I couldn’t help magnifying your racist ignorance.

I don't think putting your maj should hurt you too much...If that is what you plan on maj, you should put it! Bio probably wont hurt you unless it is at UCLA. There are floods of students that put bio/pre-med down...I haven't applied for awhile but can you put undecided? Also, as long as you are in UCLA's College (just changed the name from College of Letters and Sciene) you can switch (I am almost sure of that)...

Good Luck!

First, the racist thing was ignorant.

Second, I put down bio as my major in apps and regretted it. Typically, a wanna-be pre-med is putting that down, and that sort of student is extremely motivated and has better-than-average stats. The flood of students that you are put up against is a bad thing, in my opinion.

If you're not sure, just put undecided. It should only matter for engineering because you can only get of of eng. not into. Bio is getting pretty competitive which is why I'm considering putting undecided but since it technically is not supposed to matter I think I'll leave it on bio.
