Yet another Yale chances thread

Thanks for stopping by. I'll be applying early this fall and am looking for input. Thanks.

White male from small private school in MS. Most graduates go to junior college.
GPA: 4.0 uw; not sure about weighted, but over a 4
Rank: 1/~65
SAT: 800 W; 720 CR; 600 M (I know. I'm definitely taking it again.)
ACT: 31 Composite with a 10 W. However, I also have a 30 Composite with a 12 W. Will the adcom mix and match the high writing score?
Taking the only four APs offered next year.

ECs:
-Food Pantry Volunteer-9,10,11,12-created a chapter in my school to contribute to the pantry. Won first annual community achievement award from my town.
-Heritage Oral History Program-11,12-Founder; should be finished in a couple of months. Probably write an essay about how an experience at the food pantry gave me the idea to do this.
-Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership-10,11,12-School representative to state conference. There, I was chosen from a pool of about 300 students from across the state to be the male representative to the international conference in DC. HOBY pledge volunteer at Drug Abuse resistance education (DARE). Counselor at this year's state conference.
-National Honor Society-10,11,12-Vice President, should be Pres this year.
-Quiz Bowl-9,10,11,12-Founder, Captain; this last year we were third in the Mississippi Private School Association
-Mississippi State University Community Band-9,10,11,12-Charter member, Trombone
-Math Team-9,10,11,12-Captain, placed top 10% individually in math at state competition

Awards:
Besides the abovementioned,
Highest average award in 16/18 classes ive taken so far including every honors course.
Academic Betterment Competition; 2nd in the state in English
all I can think of right now

Thanks guys.

oh yeah, will definitely be NMS semi-finalist

Come on guys, I know you have opinions.

Ace the application and you've got a good chance.

Your ec's are impressive, but i may be easily impressed because mine are so average. Do kids go to Ivies from your school in other years?

well, you are the TOP dog from your school, which is located somewhere in the MidWest- that certainly helps you

I dont think anybody has ever gone to the Ivy league from my school.

I'm going to be a little harsh, sorry in advance. Your SAT scores a little on the low side, 2120 isn't that impressive. However, if you choose to only submit your ACT score then that would be great. Coming from the south gives you a slight plus and considering most students go to a junior college in your school that gives you an edge. Your GPA is great, good job, how many of those classes are honors or pre-AP? You do however have a relatively small graduating class, which could be a reason for your rank although it is impressive none the less. Overall if I was an admissions officer, I would be hesistant to admit you on your stats alone, I strongly suggest an absolutely amazing essay to earn a slot in early admissions. Regardless, you have a solid chance, and Yale is a reach for you. Sorry for being harsh compared to others.

Thanks Yoshi. I do think I have a have a solid chance. To answer your question, 8 of those classes are honors. I do think that my essay will be quite good as the topic is fairly unique.

Mississippi = south, not midwest, no?

To answer the OP's question, no, adcoms will not mix/match ACT scores from two test dates.

Good luck from a fellow SCEA07er! :)

dude...do u go to Jackson Preparatory school? ...you had a bunch of oppurtunities...like MSMS math competition, Mu Alpha Theta...those are all easy to win in mississippi......from my experience......or did you go to JA? Northwest RAnkin, Clinton? Brandon High? Pearl?

no, my school is definitely far from MSMS, JA,or Jackson Prep in quality! im in northeast MS.

any others?

err our chances is unpredicatble... i dont think anyone of this board can offer you good advice.. i offered advice in the past.. but lookking back on the yale decision threads.. some good canidates were rejected soem accepted.. some bad got accepeted and soem rejected...i guess essays depend a lot ?!?

you've got good ec's and, other than the math, good SAT's. try and raise the math (you already know that). you're obviously working as hard as you can at your school, which is, from what i hear, the most important thing. you may not have a bajillion AP classes, but it's because your school doesn't offer them, not because you didn't sign up for them. basically, write a good essay, have a good interview, and i'd say you've got a shot. but, like everyone says, it's SUCH a crapshoot when you've got a shot at a top school.
