Yikes - my son moved in to on-campus housing yesterday and was told he and his roommates would have to move out due to bedbugs being found in the room. He didn’t get much information, but the UCLA website says residents move out for 7-10 days. Just wondering if anyone has experience with this or knows if it has been a widespread problem?
One of my kids encountered bedbugs in a summer housing situation. Your needs to make sure all (literally all) of his belongings are treated for them. Hopefully the university is helping with this as well as thoroughly treating the rooms. My kid bagged everything in sealed plastic garbage bags until,it could be treated, so that they wouldn’t follow her into her new housing. Heat kills bedbugs in all stages Clothes can be run through the dryer until they’re good and hot. If it’s still hot in LA, he could stick everything in the back of a car and leave it for a few days parked in full sun. It just needs to get to above 120 degrees for the right amount of time. She also used diatomaceous earth to treat some things. It was a high quality form, and you have to be careful not to breathe the dust, but it’s otherwise not toxic.
We had the hardest time figuring out how to ensure they weren’t in a musical instrument. We couldn’t just heat that up or spray it with something.
Make sure he doesn’t bring them home. It’s much harder and more expensive to treat an entire house full of furniture and carpet and belongings and books-they like to live in books, than it is to treat a college student’s dorm stuff.
Happened to a friend last year. Happens when you have a lot of people living in dorms.
