Hey can anyone offer me any suggestions or help. I got a 2 on the calculus ab exam despite being a very good math student (770 sat 2 and 35 act math). I want to go to UVA or Carnegie Mellon to major in engineering. Can I just leave this off my application and they want judge? Are submitting ap scores optional admissions factors? Again, I'm worried about this solely affecting my admissions chances. Any ideas?

The AP scores on college applications are self-reported, so there is no need to feel that you must report a bad one. Just leave it off.

I, too, would just leave it off. Maybe you couldn’t afford to take the exam or had a conflict that day…they don’t really have a way of knowing. Considering your other math strengths, I doubt their first assumption would be that you did poorly on the exam, but that’s just my guess. Not to mention, they would probably have to study your app. pretty extensively to match up all your classes with your reported AP scores to realize it’s missing, and frankly, I doubt that is how they are managing their time with tens of thousands of other applications to worry about (again this is just a guess lol).

I wouldn’t worry about it too much in general considering most high school juniors are taking Algebra II or Pre-calculus. You are definitely ahead of the game across the country, so AP score or not, the fact that you took ap calc as a junior will impress them, especially if you did well in the class.

I’ll bite my tongue about the rest of my peeves about the AP system, but suffice to say, while it is supposed to be akin to the knowledge you might gain in a Calculus class in college, in many cases, they are not a replica of what you will get from your Calc class in college, so please know you can still succeed at whatever endeavor you choose.
