Hi everyone, I am a prospective applicant to JHU. I was recently browsing through the JHU confessions site. It is mostly harmless nonsense as one would expect form such a site, however I found something particularly disturbing, and just before thanksgiving (!):

Surely, JHU is not like this for everyone? I would like to think that these people are just the dregs at JHU however given some of the things I have seen here I cannot convince myself that this is true.

That is what happens on a completely unfiltered anonymous forum. Many other schools have similar things happening on their boards. It is not, in any way whatsoever, representative of life at Hopkins or indicative of the average student.

I do find it slightly odd that you already knew about collegeacb, pinpointed that exact thread and that specific post therein with that search image, and then made your first post here about that? But, whatever I guess.

Do know that Hopkins has one of the best Counseling Centers in the country. I’ve had experience with it and it’s truly a great thing to have. They have highly qualified psychologists and psychiatrists, a doctor on call, appointments are very easy to make, etc. And it’s all free.

There are suicidal and depressed people everywhere, and they will be suicidal and depressed regardless of where they are. If you are suicidal and depressed now, you probably will be at JHU, or at Duke, or at UCLA…if so, I recommend seeking professional help. If you are generally content with your life, you will be generally content at JHU.

I strongly advise you not to listen to JHU Confessions. Anonymity gives people the power to do stupid things.

Hopkins is nothing like that. The mood on campus is quite the opposite of “depressing.” Everyone I’ve met is extremely friendly, outgoing, and very happy to be on campus. I’m sure any university wouldn’t be too fun if you locked yourself in the library 24/7, but at Hopkins, it’s really easy to do well in school and have fun outside the classroom.

I’ll be the first one to say that Hopkins does not have the best reputation in terms of social and academic life, but I will also be the first one to discredit that ridiculous stereotype. I’m not too sure how Hopkins got that reputation, but it is very false. The overwhelming majority of students here are happy and love the school they attend.

First of all, I really, really want to emphasize not to listen to an anonymous board. Many, many of the posts on collegeacb are for laughs and oftentimes people will post things that are not considered to be amusing by others. While I do not know if each post is true or not, but the majority of it is not. I also checked out other colleges’ and theirs also had ridiculous posts too. It’s not only Hopkins. Last but not least, collegeacb does not reflect the overall attitude, beliefs, perceptions, etc. of the student body. Instead, it reflects only a very small fraction of the student body.
