You choose UVA over...

NYU if you are liberal. Trust me.

UVA is probably a better school overall with better students/resources, and it's significantly cheaper. NYU is particularly strong in mathematics, philosophy, and a couple of other areas, but in general, it's fairly overrated in the public eye.

Better resources? Uh, I don't think so.

NYU in econ - political science? how strong is that idea? UVA is cheaper thats a big pro! but I am liberal and I am more a city-metropolitan-NYC person! soooooo hard to decide:( thanks a lot though

tenniscraze, I meant academically. Yes, UVA isn't in New York City, but it does have very good academic resources and is much better endowed.

ascremer, you know as well as I do that political orientation is not binary - so your being liberal doesn't mean that NYU would necessarily be a better fit because it's "more" liberal. As for the city part, I don't know. I can see the appeal, but at the same time, going to a school that has a real campus will keep you busy enough.

Rutgers - 10k scholarship, Univ of Missouri - fullride, Univ of Pitt - full tuition, Univ of MD, Univ of Arizona and Univ of Minnesota

I'm an out of stater from the midwest (Missouri) and I just wanted to get away and luckily ran into UVa which is well ahead of the aforementioned schools based on reputation. Luckily, financial aid has helped with the out of state costs. Although second year was very rough for me I can't say I regret my decision because of the friends I've made at this school.

Son chose UVA over Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Texas, and UGA Honors.

Tenniscraze, its not that i didnt like the engineering school, i didnt like the campus/people/school spirit, etc. at all at Mellon, it just didnt fit me.

U Southern California (USC for west coasters)
George Washington U
U Virginia

Of course I chose UVA....gorgeous campus, good-looking people (I'm one of those), and best college academically, and I'M A LIBERAL! Political Science Rocks! Thomas Jefferson's school!

I think if you're a liberal and love the west coast like me, you'd fit in at USC. There's only so much space for us liberals at UVA :(

Yeah, only 65-70% of UVA can be moderate-liberal. But I guess we can try to expand that to 100%.

Anyone who says UVA is a 'conservative' school doesn't know what they are talking about or are misinformed by such people.

Oh yeah, but I guess you could always go to a private school with a bunch of rich preps like USC to make it better.

The west coast sucks. I love the east coast. I really don't understand what there is to the west coast besides california beaches. I love snow and real weather, so I'm east coast all the way. plus, it is my home. I lived in NJ and RI for a total of 10 years before I moved to AZ. I missed the east coast right away. Taken from a guy with comparative experience, the east is way better. And I'm a strong persuasive factual liberal. I win debates. Whether or not UVA is liberal or conservative (there seems to be confusion on UVA's political orientation), I'll make it liberal, to the best of my abilities.

Whatever that means, cool. lol.

I'm from the West Coast, a Los Angeles native actually, and I'm heading to the east coast because I want real weather and real seasons. The only schools on the West Coast that I applied to were Berkeley, UCLA, and USC.

Also, USC is one of the most conservative schools in the nation. All of the Greek life, preppy, rich, Republican stereotypes that are often applied to UVA, USC is those times 1000000. And believe me. I have had a lot of experience with USC and it's undergrads.

"good-looking people (I'm one of those)"

AZboy4politics, LOL! Gotta love it.

hmm full ride to W&M and nothing for JMU? wow..interesting, but I gotta say there are going to be some really smart kids next year with people in the likes of Carnegie Mellon, Tufts, Brown,Dartsmouth, and W&M.

Who got full ride to W&M and nothing for JMU?

I don't think JMU gives out very much merit money. With an endowment of ~$34million, it can't afford to.

Semi-old post but had to put my two cents in.

NYU w/ money
U Southern California honors
U Rochester w/ money

Being OOS, can someone explain the seeming rivalry between UVA and W&M? Is it because they are both public ivies in the same state (impressive!)? Visited both schools and there were lots of remarks, funny and serious, about the "other" school. They are so different, it seems there wouldn't be much competition. I don't mean different academic wise, but rather size, overall feel, etc.
