Ok umm so what did you guys put down for ur fav movie/book/recording/website/quote??
ohhh and i wonder what these questions are for...
do u guys think Princeton can get a broad pic of who u r from ur anwsers??

I have no idea how much weight these questions have. As for what I put, I haven’t applied yet. What I will put is:

Movie: Monty Python and the Holy Grail or Ratatouille
Book: Lord of the Flies
Recording: Piano Man

Almost certainly not, because so many other applicants put down bogus responses that have no basis in truth. Princeton would definitely detect this, though of course they can’t verify.

I think the best thing to do with these responses is just to write down what is true, because that way they will coherently fit in with all the rest of your application (rather than grate against other stuff, which is what happens if you make up phony responses) and contribute some subtlety to your personality.

i totally concur
we should write down what is true
it’s just that when the questions r out there, i intend to put a question mark behind it hehe
ohh damn it’s gonna be so hard for me to pick a fav movie cause i love so many

If my favorite song is “Just Dance” would they like that? A college student friend at Princeton told me to slightly fib it and put something else, but I wouldn’t know what type of songs Princeton likes people to put, so I may just put “Just Dance”

I’m pretty sure putting “Ulysses” as your favorite book, Citizen Kane as your favorite movie, and Beethoven’s sixth as your favorite recording is the only wrong answer. I think they’re just testing to see if you’re being honest or trying to impress them.

It’s probably better to go with real answers than what you think would impress the admissions officers. They know that “War and Peace” probably isn’t your favorite book.

Mine:
Book: Atonement by Ian McEwan
Movie: Across the Universe
Song: Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
Word: Tintinnabulation

LOL! Movie: Apocalypto Song: “I Go To Work” by Kool Moe Dee (lol!) Book: Lolita by Vladmir Nabokov

^ I’m putting Lolita too! =)

I think they kind of try to trust what people put, like with Yale’s short answer questions. They have no efficient way of verifying these things but I think they add a bit of personality to each applicant.

Word: Crisp
Recording: Big Country
Book: The Good Earth
Memento: Saxophone
Movie: Wall-E

hmmmmm well i’m into music and i play the piano myself so i put Fantasie Impromptu as my fav recording
ok this may sound weird but i actually put “19 mins” as my fav book…(lame and shallow i know) but hey at least the author got her bachelors at princeton and masters at harvard
movie ummm forrest gump… that kinda sucks cause that’s really not my fav… i love way too many movies

If someone really is into classical music and literature, would it be bad to list that sort of thing due to the above concerns? I have been thinking of listing something by Aristotle for my favorite book and a classical piece for my favorite recording, but I don’t want to come off the wrong way.

if u r into classical music and literature then why not put those down??
put down what u really think, when someone really likes war and peace then it’s ok for him to put that down. there’s no right or wrong answer, when it’s urs it’s urs, when u r trying to impress them then it looks fake.
so write what u really want and then the AOs wouldn’t think it’s fake

If it’s really your favorite, go for it. What I’m trying to convey is that they aren’t looking at how smart you are, they just want a little peak on your personality. Don’t squander it by trying to impress them. Also, don’t lie. So if you really think that your calculus textbook is your favorite book, you can put that.

I’m hoping answering truly and not “impressively” won’t be detrimental.

Movie: Good Night, and Good Luck
Book: When You Are Engulfed in Flames (David Sedaris ha)
Recording: MGMT, Time to Pretend
Word: Ridiculous

These short answers are such a pain; I have way too many favorites! So now I’m narrowing down the list…sort of.
Movie options: Rent, Moulin Rouge, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Books: Harry Potter series<3, or Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder.
Recording: “Plane” - Jason Mraz, “Adelaide’s Lament” - Guys & Dolls, “La Vie Boheme” - Rent.
Mementos: Old horseshoes and tail braids from each of my horses.

Do you guys think they would be turned off if I put “40 year old virgin” or perhaps another movie with good moral, but perhaps inappropriate content (like violence)?

Movie: Starship Troopers (1997)
Book: The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
Recording: Screwed Over
Word: Mumbo-Jumbo

For favorite book, I put down the Oxford English Dictionary (it really is my favorite though perhaps because of my interest in linguistics).

i think everything´s alright, if you´re just honest. and i do think they can detect it- of course not always, but it should fit your profile ^^
fav. book: douglas adams - the hitchhiker´s guide to the galaxy
fav. movie: little big man; le fabuleux destin d´amélie poulain
fav recording: the eels- souljacker (i took recording as lp or album, not as song)
fav. word:hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia (hilarious, it´s the fear of long words ^^)
