Young Arts eligibility question

I plan on applying for Young Arts next year, and I've realized that their site says to be eligible, one must be between 15 and 18 or in grades 10 through 12. I had always thought that the requirement was to be 17 or 18 and in the 12th grade. Did they just change it this year, or was I just totally mistaken? I guess I can't worry about it now, but I was just curious if anyone knew. Or if they did change it does anyone know why?

I think they just changed the age eligibility. If my memory serves me correct, it was grade 12 a few months ago when I checked the website. Anyhow, ImThinking, good luck!

They did just change the age requirements then. It is a bad break for this upcoming senior class.

My son was a YoungArts Finalist this year. The vast majority of the kids were seniors, but there was at least one – a fellow trumpet player – who was a freshman at Juilliard.

It was a GREAT experience for him. Highly recommend it! Best of luck with your application!

Isn’t the program for some one at least HS senior and meet it’s age requirement?

Gosh, you know what I’ve always wondered? For my senior year I’ll be 15 and then 16 in late September - am I allowed to audition for YoungArts that year or freshie college year?

They changed the requirement to being 15-18 or in grades 10-12. To my understanding, that means freshmen will not be allowed anymore, which is a bummer for me because I’m 17 my senior year and 18 when I am a freshman. Not too sure why they changed it, but it is unfortunate for this year’s applicants.

You might want to talk to someone official to get the real interpretation.

My interpretation of the <age> or <grade> means that you only need to meet one of the eligibility criteria – not that you need to meet both. So, if you’re 15 (and a college graduate), you’re eligible. If you’re in 12th grade (and 42 years old), you’re eligible. If you’re both 18 and in 12th grade, you’re eligible on both counts.</grade></age>

Now, if the web site says you must be 15-18 AND in grades 10-12, then a college freshman would be ineligible regardless of age.

BTW, I know nothing about the real eligibility requirements, or the program – I’m just responding to the English in the OP.

This is from the YoungArts website:

“As of December 1, 2012, you must be between the ages of 15-18 years old OR in high school grades 10-12”.

Following that language, a 15-year old college student could apply.
