@SpartanDrew mine is a senior. How about yours? I will be sure to check back to this link next month to see if you posted an update.
Great and please do the same! My D is a junior. She also auditioned for Grammy Camp jazz sessions. Is this your D’s first crack at NYA? My D auditioned for GC last year but not YA. If she doesn’t get in this year she will audition again next year. Hoping she lands one of these for some scholarship $$$
@SpartanDrew best of luck! NYA is an amazing program! It’s a fantastic support network for artists and is a wonderful opportunity for mentoring, collaborating, sharing experiences and growing as an artist and human. You have opportunities through your art to think beyond yourself and put into action how your art can be a movement…or an action or a voice. Artists grow through the regional programs in ways they never imagined they could and they come home with the understanding of how their art is relevant and important, and as artist they are too. This program confirmed for my D that she was meant for this path and she made friends with other very motivated talented artists who keep in touch and continue to share ideas (and reps from YA keep in touch too). Many young artists apply more than once, it’s just part of the path of pursuing excellence in your craft, to keep chasing it! So my hope for your D is that this “crack” at NYA is successful and she can experience it first hand!
@followurheart thanks for the great info! Did your D get in last year? Sounds as though she did which is awesome. I just read a thread from last year’s acceptance list etc and saw everyone stressing out mid November waiting to hear something. How were you all notified and when? I’m hoping my D has a chance in her disciplines but jazz voice is SUPER competitive so I’m not holding my breath on that one. I think her music that she’s written is very good so I think she has a shot at singer/songwriter but we will see. Her stuff is unique and not “folksie” which having seen a lot of the finalists from last year in this category seem to be. She will for sure audition for this again next year as well as Grammy camp jazz. Fingers crossed! I’m hoping she gets at least an HM or Merit. If she does do you know how getting into the regionals works? That looks like you don’t have a chance to get in if you don’t live in NYC or within a short drive of there…
@SpartanDrew yes, my daughter did win for one of the two categories she auditioned for last year. Because she was not a finalist she is allowed to try again this year, which is great, because for the category she did not win last year she really wanted a chance to work on her craft all summer and try again. It’s very stressful, the waiting, for both parents and young artists! An excellent distraction for us both this year has been college applications and preparing for auditions.
My D’s NYA notification came in the form of an email, while she was at school, and she is terrible about reading her emails. Last year they emailed all the details about the regional program and you respond to that email, however space is limited, so you get to wait again to see if you are selected for regionals. I think that was the most difficult wait of all, because you are already so excited about being selected as a NYA winner and it just feels like you are overflowing with joy…and then you wait…again…Haha!
I have also read and heard the same rumors you have about it being impossible to attend regionals if you live on opposite coasts. I don’t know if that is true, I suppose if the cost is prohibitive I can understand why it might be a rare occurrence.
Anybody know when notifications begin?
@stressinsteph last year they used twitter to announce they were close to a complete list. As I recall it was around the 18th or 19th. I don’t have any information about this year, but, following them on twitter is a good idea.
@stressinsteph I read all of the posts from last year’s thread YoungArts 2016. It looks like people were notified all throughout the week prior to Thanksgiving. I can’t recall but maybe finalists were called? HM and Merit got emails I’m fairly certain. So I’m guessing if we hear nothing by Thanksgiving then my D didn’t make the cut for anything. Fingers crossed! I hope everyone posts on this thread as they get news! Good luck to all of you amazing artists!
@SpartanDrew Yes, Finalists were contacted via phone during the week up to the final list release. Honorable Mention and Merit winners received emails on the day of the list release.
Last year, non-winners didn’t receive an email until December.
@MandomeLife were you a finalist? I also read that different disciplines were called on different days. My D has submitted for jazz voice and singer/songwriter so not sure if all of voice will be notified at the same time or different. Hoping to get good news around here in 2 weeks! Hopefully everyone will post news here either way
I was an honorable mention winner.
Yeah – the finalists at my school received phone calls in waves depending on their discipline. Those phone calls went up to the day of the list release, and there were two occasions where they called a finalist whose discipline didn’t match the wave pattern (I.e not even in the same broader category like jazz voice and voice). That being said, stay hopeful through the entire week. Even if a phone call doesn’t come, but an email does, the YoungArts regionals are fantastic programs that equal YoungArts Week’s breadth of classes and events – just at a lower intensity. Unless you live in Low Angeles, Miami, or New York, then spots for those run out fast. Make sure to watch your and your D’s email (if she has it open to you) for that email. You’d want to respond minutes after receiving it.
@MandomeLife that is what I have heard. We live in Michigan and I have heard that if you live outside of the region you are not likely to get a spot. We would go to any one of the 3 if she is a winner. If you have advice on how to land one of those coveted Regional spots please share. Of course that’s a bit of the cart before the horse but would be good to know if she does get an HM or Merit
@MandomeLife do you know what happens if a finalist misses a phone call? Do they still receive an email notification (just asking because you had finalists at your school)
@SpartanDrew I wouldn’t have any advice about that except be prepared for the email, and act on it immediately.
@lilylilyshah All the finalists at my school picked up the phone when YoungArts called. All finalists get emails on Friday at the same time as other winners.
I plan to get my D’s email login that week just in case…
Thank you very much for the response! @MandomeLife
saw this on twitter regarding when winners will be notified

@tessbecket We aim for early December, but sometimes it’s earlier or later depending on how adjudications go. So, just a few weeks!

@SpartanDrew It’s been before November ends for the past four years, although I do think they are anticipating a higher total application count.
Thanks for sharing.
That’s exactly what I’m hoping for! Hopefully everyone will post on this thread as they hear news! Good luck to everyone!

to me
The list of winners should be on our YoungArts website December 1, 2017.
Thanks and Good Luck!
–Hey everyone—I got this email from YoungArts. Not sure if it could be earlier, but I thought that I’d share it anyway.
