YoungArts 2018-2019

Finalist in dance
Congrats to everyone ā€” hope to see some of yā€™all in Miami!!
My email went into spam as well, which is weird since Iā€™ve emailed YA previously. I wish I had seen it before so I could have been mentally prepared for the call (long story short, I started crying like a baby, poor lady on the phone probably thought I was crazy lol).

wait have there been a poetry winners yet that anyone knows of?

Does anyone know of any finalists in short story?

i submitted in spoken word and just now realized i didnā€™t put page numbers on my poems :frowning: i really hope this didnā€™t disqualify me. iā€™d be devastated since this is my last eligible year

@tripletmama I am in California. You theory could be correct.

Can I read any of the writing finalistsā€™ submissions? Iā€™m curious to see what they were looking for.

Also iā€™m a part of the Brave New Voices community. which is a very large community of spoken word/paper poets. Nearly every spoken word finalist every year is a member or alum of that community. I personally knew every finalist last year in spoken word. And Iā€™ve heard NOTHING from anyone in the community yet about winning in spoken or paper poetry. So Iā€™m thinking that spoken word/poetry winners havenā€™t been notified yet because it would honestly shock me if not one poet from this international community wasnā€™t chosen.

Iā€™m hoping for the best for all of us tomorrow!

@tripletmama Iā€™m not sure about regions. I saw someone on twitter who was a finalist, and they live in CA.

How big of a problem is it if we miss the finalist call? I donā€™t have a cell phone, so I gave them my landline number, and Iā€™m getting home late today. Iā€™ve basically already given up, but Iā€™d rather not be disqualified for missing it. Would I just know from an email?

@FlameAlchemist LOL, no Flame they wonā€™t disqualify you if you miss the call. Multiple people who have been named Finalist have missed their calls before xD
If you miss it you have the Email to look forward too

Have all the finalists in dance already been called/emailed?

@dancingflower i HIGHLY doubt it. there really doesnā€™t seem to be a rhyme or reason to how theyā€™re notifying people. at this point i think theyā€™re just pulling winnerā€™s names out of a hat and calling them in that order lol XD. i think finalist calls will be wrapping up over the next 1-2 days most likely

I have to believe that not everyone has been emailed or contacted that has won. There were over 800 winners last year and as someone mentioned, 180 or so finalists. It would make sense that they would be contacted by region. The kids I know that were emailed about HM and Merit were all in the NY region. Finalists could be called around the country at any time since they automatically get a spot for YoungArts week so even if Finalists were called in California that doesnā€™t mean HM and Merits were notified and could make sense. Fingers crossed for more good news for everyone today!

when do you guys think that theyā€™ll start notifying today? ?

@glamourbiscuit hopefully soon!!! yesterday they started notifying around 2 or 3, no? if not earlier, maybe around the same time

I live in CA and received an email that I am got a merit award in short story.

@SpartanDrew My daughter was emailed Merit in Voice/Singer Songwriter yesterday. We are in California. One thing is she went to regionals last year and is not allow to attend another regional. Just wondering if they sent the merit and hm to the ones that won, but canā€™t attend. Otherwise, it wouldnā€™t be fair to everyone. The regionals would fill up.

good luck today!! please stay optimistic & dont forget to check your spam inbox. also spots in regional events are NOT 100% based on how fast you reply, it also depends on your discipline & region (i have a HM friend who replied a day later and still got a spot last year)

So wait, do you have to be in the U.S. to apply? I am a U.S citizen but am living abroad. My understanding was that you just have to be a us citizen (and be the right age) to apply. But it seems like all of you are living in the us???
