@wistfulwords Congratulations!!! What was the explanation, if you don’t mind me asking? <3
I didn’t get anything, but I also didn’t expect much. Oh well, I tried. Congrats to those who won. With writing, it’s so hard to place worth in my work as I’ve never won a single thing I’ve entered, but I’m going to try and pull my head in and just keep writing.
Young Arts used to release as a list, at least they did in 2017, they started calling again during my year.
I feel like the calls just cause more stress, honestly. But I won’t lie, when I got mine I walked right out of statistics class and started crying and calling my friends. Maybe they want the process to feel more personal?
@wistfulwords also if you’re a writer you’re gonna see a bunch of my pals! Say hi to BB and BN for me. If you did Adroit there’s another mentee there too! Can’t wait to watch y’all on the livestream!
@angelbutterfly How do you know you didn’t get anything? I know it’s difficult to keep on doing it when it seems nobody recognizes it, but telling your stories and your emotions is so important to others, and to yourself <3 Keep trying!
@angelbutterfly writing is so so subjective. Part of it is the work, part of it is the person reading and judging it. You have control over one of those things — keep at it because writers like you are our future. If you ever want to swap work, DM me!
@NotAMathlete Oh I think I know who you are lol. Your creative nonfiction piece was very moving. I was a part of the Adroit Summer Mentorship Program last summer, and it was great to see some of my fellow mentees win. However, I haven’t received anything from Youngarts, and honestly, it really really hurts, especially thinking that all the contests I’ve done, from Hollins to Foyle to Scholastic, and all the lit mags I’ve been in, can’t be validated without winning Youngarts. I mean I already gave myself the time to grieve, but I think it’s super disrespectful towards all the young artists out there who are still stressing and waiting over this. But other than that, I’d be glad to share my work with you in the foreseeable future.
@shysquid they actually said that they sent me an email before but it must’ve been to the wrong address or something along those lines. Unfortunately I barely made the deadline for my regional program and most writing categories are pretty competitive so I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to go. Oh well, there’s always next year. Still pretty excited about the award and the opportunities it opens up.
@NotAMathlete I work at adroit now and will be (hopefully) a mentee over the summer. And congrats on being a finalist! Also, swapping sounds awesome so will PM you soon.
Reposting this on this thread in case it helps motivate anyone to re-check their actual spam folder.
(I posted this just now on the music major forum board)
What a crazy day. So check out this random turn of events.
My D, along with a whole mess of other folks, got that email today from Cornish, congratulating her on being a finalist. Which, to be clear, was very confusing since she hadn’t been told she was a winner of any kind. We assumed it was an error. And it was. Because they recalled the email twenty minutes later.
And then YoungArts posted on twitter that they still aren’t done contacting people and not to listen to other people.
So par for the course, lots of confusion lol.
But then on a whim, prompted by the bogus mail from Cornish, I went and looked in her spam folder on Gmail.
And turns out she actually won a merit award.
The email was sent last Wednesday afternoon at 3PM, same as everyone else.
I swear we checked in there last week when people were talking about spam.
But I realize now we were looking in deleted or trash or something else.
You actually have to scroll down to even see the real spam folder and we just missed it.
So we just clicked to sign up for the regional event in NYC, but I don’t have high hopes because we just registered almost a week late. We sent an email explaining, but will see if that helps.
Anyway, I know I must have read 20 people post about checking the spam folder.
And I’m a very tech savvy guy.
But somehow we still missed this. So seriously, go check again.
So how’s that for a crazy turn of events.
The only way we found out she won merit is because we got a bogus mail from Cornish saying she won and that made us check again. What a world.
I got the bogus email to, i freaked out and cried and frantically showed my art teacher I made it!..but i refreshed and there it was…the other email…im so upset right now not gunna lie, checked my spam to there was notheing there. soooo idk whats happening now …kind of embarrassed now
I emailed YA just now asking if all winners had been notified and they didn’t give me a straight yes/no answer… They just said the list of winners would be posted on Dec 2. It honestly seems like everyone got notified on the 14th or shortly afterward, I doubt any more emails are being sent out
Omg small world! You’re probably right haha about my identity so feel free to shoot me a FB message! @jxu316
Also, if you’re looking to apply to college please consider mine! Emory has a wonderful English department and big scholarships for the Emory Scholars (all of you consider applying, you’ll be incredible candidates!)
Happy to show y’all around and introduce you to my professors!
Hi there! I’ve been ghosting this forum and I was wondering if you could go over my writing with me.I’m pretty sure I didn’t win anything, but I still want to improve. This is the last year I’m eligible, so there’s no chance of a next time, but I still love writing, so I’d love some help.
@NotAMathlete and everyone else!
I kept trying to post this then realized I was getting flagged for profanity even tho i wasn’t swearing haha oops. but omg did any other finalists on here get the email to confirm youngarts week attendance? i just responded now after their offices have closed so technically missed the deadline!!! i was too shocked on the phone to listen to the date she was telling me to respond by i hope this isn’t a problem rip!
@dreamthief001 I never got that email… I called on Monday and confirmed with the director of productions at YA that I will be coming to YA week, so maybe she didn’t send me the email because of that? :-S
@dancingflower yeah im sure that’s why. i was going to call yesterday and forgot! i think the actual deadline is tomorrow though so i should be okay (…hopefully lol)
oh okay that’s good to know! Yeah don’t worry, if you emailed today and the deadline is tomorrow then you should be fine.
@KeatsStar200 Ofc, no worries, just shoot me a message!
And, I know this sounds cheesy, but there is always a “next time.” It might not look or happen the way you expect it, but, at the end of the day, Young Arts is one opportunity in the long series of opportunities you will, inevitably, be blessed with.
Whenever I’m upset, my mom tells me this: even the clouds move on and so will we. Of course, this is easier said than done. But still, I promise you, your passion and courage are not wasted — prepare for all that is to come (and there is so so much).
(P.S. Have y’all read the Kim Addonzio’s “To the Woman Crying Uncontrollably in the Next Stall?” It always makes me smile : - ))
hey guys, i got an email from SAIC, not SCAD. does anyone know what this means?
@beachdays1 i got that as well and i think it said that it was sent just for participating in youngarts. since today is the deadline to respond for youngarts week and regional programs, notification has to be finished by now.
