Youngarts 2019-2020

I got a call from a number I didn’t know and flipped out a bit; ended up being a wrong number call -_-

Yeah, if you guys get a call make sure it reads Miami Florida lol ?

Does anyone know if youngarts are more favorable to artists that are going to a arts highschool or college ?

It sure seems that way in certain disciplines…see the same arts high schools win every year.

@Ohdeanor Yeah that kinda concerns me because i go to a pretty unknown school and not an arts high school. I’ve always been jealous of people who do!

If I’m being honest, I would say yes. I commonly scour the winners list of past years and always see the same high schools represented. Laguardia, New World, Dr. Philips… I’m sure there are schools they expect to be great and even when the submissions aren’t the best, they may feel obligated to “final” at least a few people due to a school’s reputation. This may be pessimistic, but it is definitely something I have noticed.

@Stress19372919 I see the same exact thing on the past winners list. I don’t want to be disrespectful but I feel like if young arts are choosing me or someone from Miami high school of the arts they wont blink and eye and choose them. if anyone goes to a performing arts high school I’d like to hear your opinions.

@anarthoe reminder that judges look at our work blindly without knowing our personal information (which should include where we go to school). i go to an arts high school, but there aren’t many people who choose to submit to youngarts/get selected here anyways. i do agree that going to an arts school gives somewhat of an advantage though technically and professionally–you have the mentors that can give you good points and necessary feedback/critique as well as a majority of supplies (like borrowing a camera to document work, galleries/setups where you can install/hang your work so it keeps everything consistently professional, open studios) that can push your work even further. however, i really do believe it all boils down to what you do with the resources available to you and the voice you present throughout your work that the judges will truly appreciate, and not simply where you come from.
(although i do see a lot of schools based in miami from past lists of winners. so maybe they know a little more about what youngarts explicitly wants aside from the given rubrics.)

They do a blind judging, so it doesn’t have anything to do with schools, it’s just the fact that most kids that go to art schools have trained for years and have teachers helping all the way through. For example, someone applying in theater from LaGuardia has probably been coached and directed through whatever scene they’re doing, they have nice cameras they can use, studios to shoot in. I had literally zero feedback on my audition because I don’t have a coach or drama teacher, I shot on my iPhone 7 in my attic. It sucks because I literally don’t have any of these things available to me, but that’s just kinda how it is. Also, the reason most of kids that end up as Finalists come from the same few schools is probably because they’re encouraged to apply by administration.

Like some others have said, keep in mind that a lot of students from arts high schools are actively encouraged to apply by the administration and by fellow students, so there’s likely a greater proportion of arts high school applicants anyways. Plus considering that they have added support and advice, those applicants often consequently represent a significant portion of the winner pool.

@remi01 thanks a lot for your insight! And I do realize the whole blind judging I just saw the pattern of the last winners which were either mostly from miami or an art high school

Have we heard any finalists being announced today??

To be fair, however, there is a sort of “less blind” aspect of judging. If a winner in a category from last year reapplies in the same category the next year (because they didn’t get finalist the year before), they are marked for automatic advancement to the final round of adjudication and compared to the applicants who made it through multiple rounds to the final round too. This doesn’t mean those previous winners will automatically win again this year, but it gives them a much better shot and they likely will be remembered by the judging panel considering their work won the year before and likely will still look similar in style.

@b8rn8rd That makes a lot of sense especially if the discipline is acting or dance that would be even more obvious if they applied before and didn’t get in.

Ive only seen one finalist today by a dancer

By the way, I have a friend who is a finalist for creative non-fiction. She found out on the first or second day of notifications.

I think all finalists have been notified. The finalists that I know of were all notified last week. Now the wait for HM and Merit!

I believe another reason there are more finalists from arts schools is because the applicants from those schools have already demonstrated a certain level of proficiency to gain admittance.

@SingSing I don’t think they all have been notified, as youngarts posted on twitter 2 hours ago that this week they still are in the process of notifying and confirming finalists. Don’t get your hopes super high obviously, but I wouldn’t jump to conclusions yet.

There also might be some people that can’t attend the week in Miami, so after the 20th (I’m fairly certain someone said that’s when you needed to confirm you were going) some new people might get calls. Obviously chances are pretty low so take this with a grain of salt, but there very well may be people that haven’t gotten the call yet.

@b8rn8rd I hope I am wrong!
