With all those scholarships, your son has redefined the meaning of “professional student”!

Congrats to aero’s son. Sounds like a true depiction of what can happen if one applies himself! KUDOS to you for raising a fine young man with loads of potential!

Bamagirls-what a great feeling to see your young lady blossom! Congrats to her, too!

Congratulations, Aero, and thanks Asaunmom!

The recent Sticky Thread listed this oldie, so I was reminded to have a look here. (thank you, everyone, for the kind words of congratulations) I’m surprised that there have been no posts in a whole year. WHAT? How quickly it has gone.

I remember 2 years ago, when S was first thinking of visiting UA, reading all of the amazing things that students were involved in, both on this thread, but on many other old threads. Being such a large school, I didn’t think my S would ever represent UA like so many others do…and, I am somewhat embarrassed to be a repeat poster here…but here goes:

In July, S was once again chosen as a Walter Beall Scholar for 2013 (see above for details on that Foundation, post #101). This was not an automatic renewal of his 2012 scholarship - he had to competitively re-apply with all other applicants nationwide. That was nice enough. But then, he also received notification in July that he was awarded an American Helicopter Society (AHS) student scholarship, sponsored by the Redstone Chapter out of Huntsville. This is a special opportunity for him and he has already taken advantage of the mentorship and contacts this scholarship has given him. It’s not very often that you can pick up the phone and dial someone, who, in this case, is responsible for the entire attack helicopter program, globally. Priceless.

Then, as if it could get no better, just this week, we received notification that S was to receive the Lawrence C. Fortier Memorial Scholarship, in memory of an important ATCA (Air Traffic Control Assn) member who died last November 2012. This scholarship, like the Walter Beall Foundation scholarship, is special to my S and to our family, as it was S’s grandfather who started S’s initial interest in aviation and who has also since passed. I am so proud that my S can represent the University of Alabama while honoring the memory of Walter Beall and Lawrence Fortier, nationally, and to receive the benefits from the AHS, more locally.

I will repeat what I said a year ago and say that these scholarships were earned by the many positive connections my S has made at UA. Several different staff members helped him with letters of recommendation. His involvement in on-campus activities no doubt made him stand apart as well. As he said in his scholarship essays, to use aviation-speak: “UA has been a perfect place to land.”

ROLL, Pitch, Yaw, TIDE!

Sweet, aeromom. Congrats to yaw all. :)

Congrats to Aeromom’s son and family!

I didn’t realize that no one had posted a Bama Brag for a year.

Please add your Bama Brags (old and new ones) to this thread so that new visitors to the Bama forum can see how Bama students and Bama grads are doing!

My Bama Brag is “old news” for the regulars on the forum (lol, I even made a thread about it!). My ChemE son graduated in May 2013 and is now in med school.

Four weeks on campus:
LOVES all roommates
lots of dorm friends
loves sorority
loves classes ( and attends! )
Junior Delegate to Panhellenic Council
Freshman Forum,
some Gorilla Theater Student Group,
and we have hada text every day!

we are thrilled with BAMA.

I think a bunch of women in the Bama sororities deserve a Bama brag for their efforts over the last couple of weeks!

Congrats for all the new “brags”!!

Roll Tide 3togo

Atta Boy Aeroson and parents! Roll Tide!

Our DD completed her first full Ironman competition in Louisville in August! Youngest competitor at age 18!

Thanks for bringing this thread back to life, Aeromom. Congratulations to your son. What a special accomplishment!!!

Congratulations on the Ironman competition. Amazing!

Wow, just wow to UA, President Bonner, the students that spoke up, and to the rest of the folks that integrated the sororities. Amazingly fast response.

My most favorite thing about UA is their capacity for improving in any respect. I am so pleased my D chose this school. She is part of the UA family and by extension so am I. Feels good.

For my brags about my D:

My D was able to do research at UCF for 12 weeks the summer of her freshman year. It was in computer science and was paid!! I think she made a good candidate because of her CBHP experience. (I also think that anyone with a number of computer science classes would have been a good candidate too.)

This summer my D did paid research at Duke University. It was in the area of computer architecture. This time I think the tipping point was her love of the Digital Logic course taught at UA.

Both of these were REUs (Research Experience for Undergraduates) that can be found on the NSF (National Science Foundation)website. Look for next year’s REUs as early as October. Most seem to be posted around Nov/Dec timeframe.

My DS stayed at Tuscaloosa all summer to help with Coach Grant’s Men’s BBall Camp and went to Europe for free and got paid as part of staff for exhibition games in Netherlands, Belgium, and France…“Dad, Paris is so beautiful!”…Priceless!

Crimson Tide Hoops has Top 10 recruiting class for 2013 and 2014 and the team will be playing in a city near you: LA, NYC, Dallas, and SEC country…

Wow!! So many terrific accomplishments!!
Congratulations to all these wonderful students and athletes!!

I love this topic. Please keep bragging.

Only because you asked, Sticker… ;)

My son is double majoring (Marketing & Film). This past summer he completed a paid business-related internship and was offered a job with the company upon graduation (he’s a senior this year).

On the film side he just landed a part-time position with the Center for Public Television, an organization that produces documentaries and other content for Alabama Public Television and WVUA. They are also a production house for commercials. My son is shooting and editing video for them, and hopes to be assigned creative projects as the job progresses.

For good measure, he was also selected as a Moral Forum Scholar for the second year in a row this fall and, consequently, is again serving as a T.A. in Moral Forum, a UA Honors College course run out of the Center for Ethics & Social Responsibility.

Wow! Impressive young man! Congrats to him. He obviously had amazing parenting :)

Thank you, Sticker. He also has amazing drive and has had amazing support from the University of Alabama.
