So I tried to post something, and the response was “Your comment will appear after it is approved.”
It did not appear later, and there is no message or other indication why it was not approved.
What does this mean?

Well, obviously, as a brand new user, you’re a bit of an unknown factor around here. Probably some oldie with as many as 10 thousand comments (can you imagine the seniority) will skim your proposed post before okaying it.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
@ucbalumnus I answered your issue via PM.
For everyone else, as I’ve said before here, the message is usually caused by 2 things:
• A word which is not allowed, generally a profanity or an acronym that if spelled out contains a profanity
• A link which is not allowed, usually to social media or a personal blog or to a commercial site. Examples of links not allowed include, but are not limited to: Twitter, Facebook, Wordpress, Prepscholar, any url shortener (e.g. tiny url).
As an FYI, if your post is saved as draft, copy and paste into a PM to yourself. If something appears with asterisks, that is that part that you need to edit out.
Huh I just had that happen with a post…no hyperlinks and no profanity or potential profanity or even robot perceived profanity…just the moderation message that it won’t post until “approved”. Sad state of affairs me thinks.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
And I explained the issue to you in a PM.
Actually, that was the issue. You made a typo on the word “shut.”
What was wrong with mine?
Thanks
@ufmomfriend You used the name of a commercial site that is blocked.
As an FYI, the pop-up message has been changed, and now reads:
Hi there! I just had my most recent post flagged as well, as far as I know, no words could have spelled out profanity, nor did I include links, it was just a post about letters of recommendations - I unfortunately didn’t save as a draft so I don’t know how to look back on it, would it be possible to get a PM from a moderator to find out what the issue was? Just so I know what to avoid posting in the future, thank you!
@Lorenne I’m not sure what the issue was, but it is now posted.
@skieurope Oh, thank you so much!
I had one that was moderated simply because I had a word in Chinese (or was it Korean) in it. Are posts with other languages other than English automatically flagged?
Automatically? No. Those are deleted/edited manually. Per forum rules:
http://www.collegeconfidential.com/policies/rules/
We’ll make exceptions for foreign words/phrases that are commonly known by English speakers e.g. (hasta la vista or a la mode), but mods will automatically delete words that are not in the Latin alphabet.
Hi what were wrong with mine? I’ve edited my post several times and it keeps telling me that it’s flagged?
Nothing. The first post from a new user sometimes needs to wait for a human to verify that it is not spam. Your post now appears @cookie321
When a post gets the “flagged for moderation”, there is no way for the poster to know what specific word is forbidden.
On the other hand, there are other forbidden words that do not prohibit the message from being posted, with the forbidden word replaced by * characters.
@ucbalumnus Copy and paste the text into a PM and the word/term with an issue will show up as asterisks.
Actually, AFAIK, any word that would be replaced by an asterisk is automatically flagged for moderator review. The mod will review the meaning of the word in context, and decide whether or not to approve. For example, “niche” when combined with “(dot)com” will be flagged for review, which the mod, if approving, may edit out the “(dot)com” or not. If not,the approved message will show stars. So, “I used niche.com to research…” would be approved; “Check out this link on niche.com” would not.
Hi @skieurope I’m also having trouble just trying to reply to comments on my own thread. I tried to look into sending a PM to myself but I don’t think I am able to create a new message yet. It has been about a day since I tried to post on my thread and got the flagged message.
Thanks!
It looks like you’re OK now - I see that you replied on your thread after you posted here.
I posted a question this morning. I’m a new user, but not sure what I may have done could be wrong? The post briefly appeared and I attempted to edit it just for spacing and I received a notice that I couldn’t edit it until it was approved. Now, I don’t see my question at all. Any ideas what happened to my post?
