-In retrospect, I probably should have asked this before applying to Emory, but now I guess it’s better late than never…
-I haven’t gotten my aid numbers yet.
-I apologize in advance if anyone has already asked this before.
I’m an accepted Emory/Oxford student who is currently contemplating whether or not to enroll. I punched in a few numbers for Emory into their NPC and the total came out to a very large number w/o loans . On the other hand, I punched in practically the same numbers for Rice/WUSTL, and my cost came out to roughly 10k less (bear with me… i’m low income so this is huge). I know that I can’t expect them to be exactly the same, but a 10k a year difference is a ton especially when emory is #18 for “best value.”
Is emory’s NPC accurate? Should I expect little to no aid despite my low income?
Probably not. Also, go check and see if your income falls into the Emory Advantage ranges…If not, flat out tell someone (perhaps not financial aid) that is in an administrative position about how Emory is comparing to those two in terms of fin. aid offerings…because that is non-sensical for a school that is in serious competition and wants to compete for top talent. Short-changing folks on financial aid is a sure-fire way to ensure that Emory never yields the best of the low-middle income students. They will be lost to places who admit them that offer much more money in the form of grants.
@bernie12 I checked and I think i’m within the lower end of the Emory Advantage range. It’s just the NPC that’s being a bit wonky right now… hopefully i’ll be pleasantly surprised with financial aid offer. Thank you for the advice though, I will definitely see if I can appeal if the offer isn’t to my liking. : )
In the meantime, I guess i’ll just hop on the Rice waitlist and hope for the best.
I did rough estimates for the calculator and it said I would mostly only get loans, but emory actually gave me close to $40000 in grant aid with loans on top of that. So no, the calculator was not accurate, but then again I don’t think the information I put in was either.
Good luck!
@aluminum_boat @Frenckt Thanks guys! I guess i’ll just wait and see. Too bad it’s taking a while. In the meantime, I might just start on my UCSD/UCD waitlist statements!
Frenckt, that’s good to hear! Hopefully that’s the case and Emory’s NPC is a bit wonky. : )
Hey posting for my daughter, We have the financial aid awards to Emory Oxford and to Rice. As it stands attending rice would be 4000 a year cheaper then Emory Oxford. Do Oxford students get less financial aid then Emory college students? Truthfully my daughter is leaning more toward Rice especially if it will cost less. And bizarrely flying to Houston is almost half the price of flying to Atlanta even though it’s much further. As a point of curiosity when you get accepted to both oxford and Emory college do you get 2 financial aid awards or one?
@robotrainbow : Rice is known to be the cheapest selective private institution so I am surprised that Oxford could anywhere close to that, and I would imagine that with Emory advantage, main campus would be more generous I suspect they do not have the same fin. aid systems)
rice is the cheapest tuition in absolute dollars but the EFC would be the same between the two. The Fafsa EFC is universal for all schools that say they meet 100% need.
I get the feeling that many of those (including Emory) who say they meet that are stretching a little because reality is that the school’s own calculator will try to find more ways to justify increasing your EFC than FASFA might which is also why CSS exists.
