Your favorite course

Instead of combining this Q with my other thread about thecourseforum, I thought it might be good to keep it separate.

It might be helpful to incoming first years (and maybe others) to list some of your favorite courses. On another thread a few people mentioned a CS course. Hazel has previously mentioned a course that I can't remember. It might also be helpful if you could talk briefly about the course and what kind of student might enjoy it.

Maybe you could even cut and paste each new entry onto the previous one???

There is a thread like this, but it will be good to update it.
Here are some of the threads I’ve found. I’ve posted about my schedule a bazillion times and I know there is at least one thread I’m missing.

TV4 - These all sound interesting! Hazel’s given you the links to some great threads as well. You should forward this all on to your daughter so she can dig through and see what really interests her. She might find it fun.

^^^I got most of these from Hazel’s links, and I plan on showing my D the link to thecourseforum, this thread, and ratemyprofessor, and letting her do her own thing.

I sent my son lots of links his sr year/summer before first year. He got so tired of hearing things like “have you heard about this thing called lou’s list? I sent you a link.” I have no idea if he ever used any of the nifty links I sent, but he managed fine and it made me feel better. lol

Good luck to your daughter as she approaches orientation in a few weeks! Very exciting!

Ha! I love seeing the list of the same courses each year. Many of those classes are recommended mainly because the professors are famous, and not necessarily because the class is interesting.

Here are a couple of classes that I have taken so far that I believe are damn good:

1) PHIL 2660 - Philosophy of Religion - T. Merricks
2) PLAP 3140 - Mass Media & American Politics - P. Freedman
3) ARTH 2351 - 18th Century European Art - D. Fordham
4) PLAP 3700 - Racial Politics - L. Sanders (Lynn is something else!)
5) RELG 2630 - Business Ethics & Society; A lot of Comm School kids take this class

Bigwill…just a little curious how you found Racial Politics with Lynn Sanders to be really good. I mean don’t get me wrong I love Sanders (she was my advisor), but I wasn’t the only one to find Racial Politics a little dry and Sanders’ teaching style to be a little eratic at best. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though. I do agree with you that Mass Media and American Politics was great (Freedman is very charismatic).

My most enjoyable courses in no particular order are:
HIEA 2101, Modern Korea, R. Dimberg (one of the best lecturers I have ever had)
HIUS 3282, History of Virginia since 1865, G. Gilliam (cared about students like no other)
PLAP 3160 Politics of Food, P. Freedman (J term course but really intimate and good)
HIST 3611 Espionage & Intelligence, G. Haines (easy/fun course, Haines is a riot)
PLIR 3650 International Relations of the Middle East, W. Quandt (Quandt knows his stuff)

My overrated courses are:
PLAP 1010, Intro to American Politics, L. Sabato (guest speakers are great but everything else was “meh”)
HIST 3671, History of Civil Rights Movement, J. Bond (Bond seemed bored with his own lectures, he had a fascinating life but the enthusiasm really wasn’t there)

kindaslick89, I agree. Sanders is very erratic and she does have a tendency to go off on tangents. lol. But I don’t know. I thoroughly enjoyed the readings and I think she did a good job getting to the meat of each book. And Lynn was/is easy to get in contact with.

Disclaimer: I love talking/reading about race, politics, education and law–particularly in regards to the black community. So, I probably would have enjoyed the class regardless of who the professor was.

Thats cool. I had a good TA in the class so my experience was better than some other courses in the Politics department. Even if she does jump around a bit from time to time, Sanders means well and she definitely has passion. Plus she wrote me a rec for grad school so she is definitely ok in my book.

I took Sabato’s class, and while I did well (A-) and learned a lot, I don’t think he was a good professor AT ALL. He is incredibly knowledgeable and has a lot of anecdotes, but that didn’t translate into good lectures in which any useful information could really be gleaned and written down. I had to essentially re-learn the entire class for the mid-term and final.

HOWEVER - it’s important to take classes from such well-known and well-respected professors, I think. I can’t believe I didn’t know Julian Bond was a UVA prof and now I’m gutted that I missed out on taking one of his classes.

Classes with Dimberg and Womack are always great. Not an easy A but world class. I took several classes with these Professors and they were always first rate.

There was an article that Julian Bond has retired from teaching.

^ That’s what I’m saying, I didn’t know he WAS a UVA prof until I read the article that he was retiring!
