We buy containers of greens for salads, a spring mix usually. The kind we used to get…once you opened it, it spoiled within a couple of days if you didn’t use it all.
Well…buy the Simply Nature organic spring mix. Last week, I had guests and bought the large container. I used way less than I thought I was going to use. It’s still fresh 8 days after opening. It’s delicious too.
Purchased avocados for 65 cents each and pomegranate for $1.25 each. I’ve been getting a good deal on red grapes from there lately. Less than a $1 a lb.
Well, I just have to come back and update this thread. I have continued my fascination and love for some of the Aldi products.
A few new things I’ve tried and will continue to buy:
Frozen food section, mussels in garlic butter sauce - I kid you not, $2.99! Lots of broth in them. Great item to serve as an extra item at dinner or an appetizer with bread chunks.
Their sandwich thins (I use them to make breakfast sandwiches) are like $1.29 for 6.
Flavored creamer that doesn’t taste artificial! All their dairy products like milk, half and half, sour cream - so inexpensive.
Today I bought Gino’s East deep dish pizza for like $5.99. Thought it would be a quick meal one night when I really am craving something quick but a splurge.
@abasket I very often get their pizza…the not frozen ones near the meat section. I get a large cheese one, and then doctor it up with whatever is in the house…meat, mushrooms, veggies, and extra mozzarella cheese. Delicious.
Agree about the dairy products. We get their cottage cheese, sour cream, butter, yogurt, eggs.
Have you tried the salad dressings…or the organic croutons? Those are good too.
I don’t do croutons but I have bought their garlic vinaigrette. I’m such a fan of Garlic Expressions (made her locally) that it’s hard for me to LOVE anything else, but I liked this.
I have tried a couple of their pizzas - better than big box frozen!
My h likes the French onion dip. We get a lot of staples, fresh fruits and vegetables. There are cookies there that are so similar to Girl Scout Sonia cookies and peanut butter patties. So similar that our family did a taste test with Girl Scout cookies and actually thought the Aldi ones were better! I think they are around $1.50/box…or at least under $2. We still supported our local Girl Scout when she came by to sell cookies too.?
The frozen brocolli florets for under $1 are so much better than Birds Eye equivalent for twice the price. Aldi package has only florets, Birds Eye is half cut up stems.
Bumping up because it’s been a while and coincidentally, the thread was started March 2020 - when we all stopped going in-person shopping!!!
Also, grocery prices are taking a big leap as we all know. I think a place like Aldi can help to combat some of that. I went yesterday and I spend $125 but I had LOTS of items. Meat for probably at least 10 dinners. Two items that were “splurges” (ghee and a Rava easy chicken alfredo meal to give to S and DIL for a busy work week they have ahead) and those two items alone were $20.
Some examples of what I would call good/less expensive that other places buys:
Shredded cheese - THREE cups for $2.99. Thick cut shredded also a choice, same $ and size.
Cheese slices (not fake cheese!) - Provolone and a white sharp cheddar, 12 slices, $1.99
Cheese curds, 1 pound package, $4.49
Organic grass fed ground beef, $4.99 packaged pound
Panko crumbs (I use instead of bread crumbs) $1
Canned pumpkin $1.29
Bagged chocolate chips (dark, milk chocolate, semi, mini) all $1.99
Obviously I find dairy to be among the best buys there. And I use a lot of dairy.
I also bought on a whim a package of two to-be-baked apple strudels - this brand. Each one is large! I baked one last night and it was enough for a nice sized snack for 2 people. $1.99/pack of 2.
Maybe others have other new discoveries or might consider stopping in and saving some bucks. I wouldn’t do my full shopping there and I often feel their produce is just fair and can do in a pinch but def worth a once a month trip or so.
I love Aldi and mine has very good produce- I either shop here or Trader Joe’s- both convenient. If I’m making a charcuterie board, I can find everything I need here. I recently bought their pizza dough which was good and occasionally I pick up salmon.
Always buy eggs, 1/2 and 1/2, milk. Aldi for me is a quick in and out, buy mostly the same things- my kids, including college daughter, shop here as well. Prices to me are much better than elsewhere- while I do go to Costco from time to time I don’t want or need to buy in bulk.
