Your ideal Musical Theater School

Hi Musical Theater fans, I need your help!

Please take a look at these questions regarding a Musical Theatre College Program and give me your feedback. The more specific you can be the better. Thanks to everyone for their input.

What's the most important aspect when looking at a MT program?
Reputation, location, cost, industry connections, staff.....

Do you care if you get a BFA, BA, Certificate, Conservatory or training....?

What do you look for in the staff?

What is the most important component - drama, music, dance?

Finally, please list 5 programs that you would love to go to and why?

Would you consider a Canadian school?

Any other comments regarding applying to Music Theater schools? Please let me know.

Thanks, ANY answers, short or long would be much appreciated.

I would post this in the musical theater major forum (bottom of the main page).

Thanks. I’m new at this.

Elan – your questions would take hundreds of pages to answer!! To begin with, I suggest you go to the Musical Theater page and look at the FAQs link – and also check out the link that says “Suggestions for those new to the Musical Theater Forum”. There is a lot of information in there that will get you started. Then you can start browsing through the threads on this forum. Many of your questions have already been addressed at GREAT length. Everyone here is very helpful, but you’ll need to narrow it down a bit to one specific question at a time!

I’m giving you this advice because your questions are very subjective. Different things are important to different people. First you need to determine what is important to you – you might begin by looking at the differences between BA and BFA programs. If you can figure out which you would prefer, you will be able to eliminate lots of schools from your list, which will make your search much easier. Another thing is location – some people prefer a traditional college setting, some prefer an urban location. Which component is most important – well that depends on you! Are you a strong singer and want to improve your dance skills? Or would you rather focus on acting? You’ll get a million opinions on these questions, but you are the only one who can decide what is right for you.

My D is a junior MT student at Syracuse – it was a good fit for her. I am also a vocal coach, and have students at quite a few different colleges. You really have to do some research to figure out what it is you’re looking for in a school. Good luck!

Thank you. I will take your suggestions.
