Those of you who are undergrad day students in the D’amore McKim School of Business, what do you think of your classes and professors? I’m not talking about the co-op program in the business school because I know it’s great, but I’m asking about the education you get.
I’m curious to know what your academic experience has been like. Is the classroom experience - your interaction with professors and classmates - worthwhile and intellectually stimulating? Do you feel like you’ve learned a lot in the classroom? Or could you have studied on your own with little help from the professor? Do you think it’s worth the tuition you’re paying?
My peers are a mixed bag. It is widely accepted that business is a relatively easy major, and so you get a lot of dumb people and athletes who are barely skating by. That being said, there is also a good amount of people who are actually smart and interested in business, not just trying to take the easy route. It works out pretty well actually haha so long as you a.) partner with the smarter kids and talk to them instead and b.) let the dumb ones round out the bottom of the curve.
My professors have honestly all been excellent. I’m only a rising sophomore, but I’ve taken finance, accounting (financial and managerial), business stats, marketing, and entrepreneurship. All of my professors were at LEAST a 7/10, with most being an 8-9/10. This may not be true of all professors, but I had a good class registration time. They were all engaging, interested in their material, helpful and understanding, passionate, and clear experts in their fields. I really have had a great experience so far. Personally, I find it incredibly difficult to learn concepts and technical things from books (like, I could easily absorb a history textbook but not calculus). So for most of them, I definitely couldn’t have learned from just the books. Marketing, maybe, because it’s only conceptual-- but I don’t think I would’ve had a really solid grasp on it without specific examples and differentiation from my professor, in addition to our projects.
Is it worth tuition? That’s a really subjective thing and I don’t think you’d get a consensus at any school. College is overpriced in general and imo full tuition at any private school like this is not worth it. However, I have several scholarships on top of financial aid, and so my total bill for this entire YEAR at Northeastern is just shy of $5,000. Including tuition for the fall (not the spring, as I’ll be on co-op) and room and board for the duration. So with co-op, I will likely come out of this year MAKING money. Yeah, that’s worth it to me.
