I'm currently living on campus but I'll be living off campus next year. What are your thoughts on getting a car? Is it really hard to find parking on campus? What about off campus (around the apartments)? In general, do you think it would be worth getting a car? I'm mostly wondering too about getting internships--are most internships offered at places that are too far or inconvenient to get to by bus?

I don’t know how people do it, but public transportation is HORRIBLE in most of California. With that being said, i’m bringing my car this fall and i’m living on campus

Yes it’s near impossible getting parking on the actual campus, where your actually 10 minute walking distance from lecture halls. That is unless you beat out the commuters and arrive before 7:30 am. But there’s abundant parking a little further down the campus services complex or sixth apartments. There you can take the UCSD shuttle to campus.

While not as ideal for first years in college, cars a must for 2nd years and up. You definitely find yourself wanting to actually to get out of the university area.

Internships can come from anywhere. If you get one in/near scripps, just take the bus for 15-20 mins). But you can expand your possibilites for internships to maybe downtown san diego or other places that are 15+ miles from campus, if you get car.

And ask yourself do you see any companys/research opportunities within 3 miles of the campus that you really like or are leaning toward? If not, then get a car.

what you could do is find an apartment that is next to a shuttle stop so you can take the shuttle to campus, and not have to worry about finding parking spots.
plus, parking passes are super expensive.

regarding your question about off campus parking, it really just depends on where you decide to live.

San Diego is a city where you NEED a car. First years need them too, I loved having mine on campus. On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being you dont need a car at all (New York) and 10 is you’re in dire need of a car, San Diego is a 15.

I know for a fact I would have gone crazy my first year if I didn’t have my car. I’d still go crazy today if I didn’t have it

How much is a parking permit for the school year? I can’t find the price anywhere…

I’ll make the counterargument of saying that you don’t NEED a car your first year. But that’s just my opinion.

Is there much vandalizing of student cars at ucsd? i drive a fairy nice luxury car and would want to avoid any damages. is there any parking structure one should avoid?

^Not so much vandalizing, but just ****ty drivers banging their doors into peoples cars and stuff. It’s really unavoidable anywhere on campus but Pangea is particularly bad (IMO)

Now you might have to log in to your UCSD account to get to this site [not sure about that]… but here is the link:
