Your two-cents on my college major.

Hello, all! As a senior in high school, it is now that magical time for me to start applying to colleges and figuring out in a broad sense what my college studies will likely entail. I know that it is quite common and normal to change majors while at school, but I wanted all of your input on my current choices. At the moment, I aspire to become a doctor, but I could also see myself as a physician’s assistant or scientific researcher. Not really interested in the engineering field from what I have researched about it.

My current major choices (in no particular order):

  1. Biomedical sciences
  2. Microbiology
  3. Cellular and molecular biology
  4. Ecology and evolutionary biology
  5. Marine biology
  6. Biochemistry

Whether any of your current major choices, or a major in say spanish, art, literature, or whatever, med schools do not care what your major is. Most premeds tend to choose some bio major, maybe out of interest, but also because of course overlap (ie you’re satisfying major and most premed reqs at same time). Pick a major that interests you because if you like material you’re more likely to do well GPA wise which is something med schools do care about. As most premeds change their career path for any number of reasons, consider a major which can serve as a Plan B. Good luck and enjoy rest of your senior year.

Most med schools do want to see certain classes on your undergrad transcripts, such as bio, chem, organic chem, calc, labs. Depends on the school. Also consider that the MCATs will cover material that you’d study in such prerequisite classes.

Although @Jugulator20 is right in that med schools will accept almost any major (as long as you have stellar grades and MCATs), you need to be cognizant of pre-req requirements. Whatever undergrad institution and major you choose, be sure to let your advisor know that you are pre-med and they should guide you accordingly.
