On the NMSC website, I listed my first choice school as Alabama prior to March 1st because they had a great scholarship package for NMF and I was pretty sure that I was going to receive it. On March 13th, Florida State sent a message saying that I would receive the Benacquisto which is a full cost of attendance scholarship as long as I labelled Florida State as my first choice school.
I submitted my change request on the 13th, but today when I received a notification that I had received the $2500 national merit scholarship, they still listed Alabama as my first choice even though the letter was dated 13 days after I had submitted my change request. The NMSC says that you cannot change your first choice college if you already received a scholarship offer from your previous first choice in the mail.
Alabama has already added my scholarship offer to my MyBama account online, but I haven’t received an official offer from them in the mail. Will the online offer that they gave me nullify any attempt I make to change my first choice school?
Honestly, I wouldn’t mind going to either school, but I prefer Florida State.
“The NMSC says that you cannot change your first choice college if you already received a scholarship offer from your previous first choice in the mail” - this applies only to college sponsored scholarships. What you got is NMSC sponsored scholarship. You should be able to change your first choice to FSU and qualify for Benacquisto.
You may want to call NMSC and FSU and get confirmation .
Hey, I was in a similar situation and I think you can keep changing your choice (without being held to it) until May 1st. It may depend on the school, however.
On March 1st, my first choice was UT Dallas and I received their offer through their portal. A couple days ago, I changed my first choice to the University of South Carolina, and I just received their offer. Both UT Dallas and UofSC state you can select them as your first choice at any time until the final NMSC deadline (May 31st).
However, from my understanding, I would have your first choice selected by May 1st. After that date, you run the risk of NMSC mailing you an offer you don’t want anymore.
Again, check with Alabama and Florida State’s policies to make sure you can switch.
