Plagiarism

Hello. I am in need of quick assistance. In 8th grade I was caught plagiarizing on a music PowerPoint. The principal said she was not yelling at me, but just talking to me, and that she was just going to give me a warning, and if i do it again my parents will be notified. I have never ever done this again for the rest of my school years, as it was a careless and stupid mistake. I’m in 9th grade, and I got accepted into an elite private school. Because my principal said it was a warning, and was pretty chill, do you think they will notify them? Or will I be pulled out after I was already accepted? HELP NOW

If the principal was pretty chill, I doubt they will notify anyone, especially since you got off with a warning. I would just be super careful for the rest of the year!

Thank you so much. I just don’t want it on my permanent record. She wasn’t that chill, but she says that it was a “learning experience”. I don’t know if that means she still won’t notify or write it on my report. I have been trying to get into an icy league with my mom and dad sacrificing everything. To have it all ruined because one slide in a silly music PowerPoint was plagiarized would be awful. Can someone please give me best case scenario and worst case scenario. I have awful anxiety, and I need answers or even educated guesses to ease my angst.

I doubt colleges will see something like that in 8th grade. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. But it’s good you learned from your mistakes!

Middle school mistake is generally ok , it is supposed to be the learning time. Even on your permanent record , the impact is minimal.

If she were going to notify them, she would already have done so. Don’t worry. But don’t do it again.

If you are really anxious you could ask the principal, but I don’t think you need to worry about an 8th grade infraction. At the college level warnings are given and after that there are penalties. I have noticed a change toward education versus punishment these days. I really don’t think you need to worry. I am so sorry you are haunted by this mistake years later. In college, pay attention to the rules because I fear you will be traumatized by any future accusations, whether true or not!

The OP is a 9th grader worried about 10th grade offer being rescinded, not a college offers.

TBH, I don’t understand abt having principal giving a warning over a careless mistake made by an 8th grader. Isn’t junior high where they actually teach you how to do it properly? I’d think teachers should just tell you “ok this is not how you do this, this is how it’s supposed to be done.” I meant schools often forget they are there to teach to guide nowadays.

Sorry! I would still hope that an 8th grade warning would not go on the record but the OP can ask.

@2021collegeapp cheating/plagiarism is a big deal on college campuses and professors may report a student to the university. Granted the trend is toward warnings and required education for freshmen, but at school and later at work and in the world, it is important for adults to get the seriousness across early.

Totally, if OP was a college student but for an 8th grader? I don’t agree the only way to teach them is to scary them.

Anyway, to OP, I think it’s very unlikely that it’s in your record. But I’d suggest you to reach out to counselor to make sure. Ask your parents to step in if needed.

@college2021 I don’t think anyone suggested scaring the student.

I think you’re in the clear. Don’t sweat this. But I felt the same as you do now during various points in my youth—so I understand your legit feelings/concerns. Try to understand this: you are bigger than anything that could happen to you.

I meant that was what the OP’s teacher trying to do.

I’m sure, you will be ok. It is her job as a principal to give you a warning, but that’s all she did. It’s not that serious. But plagiarism could be a pain in the ass in your future education. My best friend was almost expelled due to plagiarism in his dissertation. So i recommend to use online plagiarism checker in case of a dissertation, essay, etc.
