Hi!

I was admitted to Barnard earlier this year and I am enrolled for the class of 2014. I’m so excited and I know, unequivocally, that I’ve made the right decision.

I’m in a similar situation. My parents are divorced. My mom is self-employed, making under $20,000 a year at best (her 2008 taxes were actually in the negative), and my dad has a hard time holding down a job. At the time of my application he was unemployed and technically still is (he’s trying to start up his own business but has wasted pretty much all of the allocated funds on junk he’s bought for himself). My dad hasn’t paid child support in years and even went to court to get out of it (I don’t even know how he pulled that one off, but that’s honestly a long and unnecessary story). I was able to get all of my dad’s info and he’s actually been pretty darn supportive. So as long as your dad’s in the picture, you’ll be fine. And if it’s really an issue, you can contact Barnard and they WILL work with you. At any rate, my EFC came out to be $0 as well, for both of my parents.

Barnard is amazing. When I got my acceptance, my financial aid package came out to be $54,958. Barnard requires students to pay a certain amount on their own, so I owe $1,900, which is separate from my family’s financial standing and from my own assets (and, of course, I have none). Other than that, I have $300 in work study for the entire year ($150 per semester). I owe a whopping $2,200 for my 2010-2011 year at Barnard, a school that costs over $50,000 a year. My parental contribution is $0, so my parents only have to worry about sending me money if I happen to need it. I also have an outside scholarship for $5,000, but that was used to get rid of a $3,500 loan and $1,500 of work study. Barnard only takes away from your grant money if a scholarship exceeds loan and work study amounts.

Here’s a breakdown of my package, if you’re interested…

Budget (the money I would need):
Tuition and Fees: $40,896
Room and Board: $12,950
Books and Supplies: $1,146
Miscellaneous: $1,366
Transportation: $500

Total: $56,858 (As you can see, they factored in personal needs as well)

Package (money I received):
Barnard College Grant: $41,358
Federal Pell Grant: $5,500
Federal SEOG Award: $2,000
Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant: $750
Outside Scholarship: $5,000
Federal Work Study: $300

Total: $54,958 (So, add the $1,900, and that’s everything)

So, keep in mind here that my package is entirely grant money, meaning that I don’t have to pay any of it back (I would have had that small loan I mentioned earlier, but my other scholarship took care of it). I’m pretty much getting a free ride to Barnard, all based on need.

I can assure you that Barnard will meet your financial need, as they have met mine. My counselor even called the admissions office and, without any hesitation, Barnard waived my $400 enrollment fee. They are amazingly nice and they really do look out for you.

So, please apply! Don’t let your finances hold you back. Best of luck!!!
