For those auditioning for MT at Syracuse for Fall 09 admissions:

My D (freshman MT) just told me that the faculty has decided to make the dance component of the MT auditions more challenging going forward. They have beefed up the difficulty of the audition for dance. Apparently they are looking for very strong dancers for Fall 09 (in addition to strong vocals and acting).

I don’t know much more than that. D reports in that older students who were taught the new “audition” dance in the Ballet II dance class (mostly current sophomores) said it is much harder than the dance auditions for previous years.

Just thought students getting ready to audition for Syracuse MT would like to know that.

That should be interesting. When my daughter was auditioning during the 2006-2007 audition season, Syracuse's dance audition was the most challenging of all the schools she experienced even then. Even with her many years of dance training and a summer at Syracuse's summer MT program (where the head of dance was her instructor), she reported that she had to really work it at the audition.

Yes, this is very interesting and thanks for posting it. When my D auditioned four years ago and got into Syracuse's MT program, she said it was one of the most challenging dance auditions of all the ones she did and she was a lifelong trained dancer (which implies it would have been quite difficult for someone with little dance experience). She was able to know what mark she got for dance (the monitor was a friend who had all the score sheets) and she got the highest number (I think that was a "1" if I recall their grading system at auditions). She liked the dance audition and it was very serious, but would be more intimidating (this instructor in particular from the way she described him) for those who have less training and less experience picking up combinations. So, if they are making it even more challenging still, then applicants should know this and ones with very little dance background may wish to build their list accordingly. Syracuse does weigh scores on all three components of the audition. If I recalll, you need a 1 or 2 grade on each component (correct me if I am mistaken). So, this would not be a school where one might think "I can get in by my voice and acting alone."

That's what I've heard too. Only personal note I can add is that we went to see Steel Pier 2 weekends ago -- that was their first musical of the 08-09 season. The dancing was really top-notch and also those who were cast had to have extraordinary stamina (and talent) as there was a TON of wonderful dancing (being that the story line had to do with a dance marathon). The choreography was really exceptional.

soozievt -- yes, I have in my notes from our first visit to SU that the students have to have a 1 or 2 on each component -- voice, acting and dance.

good, bring it on... haha
syracuse is my first audition (Dec. 5th)
I can't wait!!!
