I’m a sophomore in high school and I’m currently taking AP World History. Next year, I plan on taking APUSH, AP Lang, AP French, and AP Psych. I’m also going to be in three honor societies, do volunteer work, have extracurriculars, etc. I know it depends on my work ethics and how hard these courses are in my school, but is it a good idea to jump from 1 AP to 4, especially since I’ll be involved in more things than this year, or should I take like 3 AP’s or something like that?
(I’ll also be taking Calculus, Spanish 11, and PE)
Yes, do it! It looks great on your college apps and it will do you good to have a more challenging class schedule.
This is a perfectly normal soph to junior year transition for many of the top HS students. If you’ve been doing well thus far, you should be good to go.
In order to have some leeway, check with your GC whether you’ll be allowed to drop down to Honors US history if need be (and under what conditions).
@MYOS1634 I would take honors courses, but my school doesn’t offer any expect for math and science, but they’re not called honors.
It’s okay if they’re called accelerated or advanced, too
@MYOS1634 Yeah. At my school, equivalent honors courses are called “enriched” and the ones you take ahead of time are called “plus”.
I made the exact same jump a few years back; in 10th grade, I only took World History AP, but in 11th I took APUSH, AP English Language&Comp, AP Calc AB, and AP Chem.
My takeaways are that the workload obviously gets tougher, but it was still very manageable for me. The main difference was in the level of attention I could pay in each class-- while I could put all my time and energy into WHAP, I had to divide my time in 11th grade between multiple APs. It only resulted in my AP class grades dropping ~2%, but for you, it may have a more/less significant outcome (that’s for you to judge).
Studying for the AP tests was also way harder when you had more than one on your plate. I just accepted that I wasn’t going to be able to study as hard for all of them, and it turned out fine. So just be aware that you will be forced to spend less time working for each class, and if you needed a huge commitment of work to do well in WHAP, it may be a bigger adjustment for you going to 4 APs. But it can be done!
Just remember that no one’s impressed with a C in an AP class. So your goal is to take the toughest classes where you can maintain B’s. Your choices make sense but you must be ready, if you sense within the first month or so, that things aren’t going well, to “drop down” or change choices in the classes you can.
