Know of any shorter summer programs in STEM? 3 weeks max. For rising seniors? Thanks!
There are many variables…cost, how competitive, etc. Many colleges have programs about a week in length that are not too expensive (or even free). Their focus is often to expose the students to one of the STEM areas at their college…and probably to “sell” their school to the student as well. A couple examples for engineering are the University of Alabama Huntsville BEST (Be An Engineering Student) program (6 days, $300 instate, $600 OOS - but do give some scholarships), or the Auburn Sr. Tigers Camp (6 days, $695). There are also programs that are VERY expensive as well.
This camp is longer than what you are looking for, but I still thought I would mention it. Ole Miss has a 4 week program ("Summer College for High School Students -SCHS) that costs about $2000, but if your stats are high enough you automatically get a full scholarship. Their program has many options to choose from where you can take 2 classes for those 4 weeks, or there are some research opportunities that are available instead of taking the classes.
We found it valuable to try summer programs…it gave our kids exposure to residential life on a college campus, experience being away from home (and across the country), and exposure to a field they were interested in.
There is no comprehensive list that I have found, just do some google searches. Also look at individual colleges that have STEM majors, and search those for summer programs for high schoolers. As my S16 applies to colleges this fall, I have even stumbled across some options while perusing websites. You have to take some time and dig in order to find programs - but they are there!
Rose-Hulman Operation Catapult is 3 weeks. Carleton used to have a program with some STEM courses, but if I remember right they don’t tell you for some time after accepting you which set of courses you get to take – my kid eventually threw in the towel on them and went to a program where it was clearer what she would actually get to do.
I attended the PAN program mentioned above (in 2013), if anyone has any questions about it.
Try mysummeradvisor.com and search under Academic Programs. There are lots of one or two week programs. Just for example, University of Maryland has several one-week cybersecurity programs. It would be helpful if you could narrow either your interest or area of the country. Programs for rising seniors aren’t usually general STEM programs, but rather, specialized in astronomy, physics, robotics, engineering, etc.
Engineering would be preferable. So far, E2 at MIT is on our list but we only meet one of the preferred admission criteria.
My kid went to the SITE program at Alabama and loved it. Only 5 days long but good!
Is the kid male or female? My D enjoyed this one: https://engineering.temple.edu/summer-programs/we2
and also loved Summer@Brown
Female. WE2 sound really good. Thanks.

I went to E2 and I want to emphasize that you don’t have to meet all the requirements to be accepted (other than the basics like rising senior and US citizen). However, be aware that the application is integrated with MITES and MOSTEC so even if you are accepted there’s still only a 1/3 chance of getting E2.

Stone Lab at OSU has some neat ones, marine bio and similar. It’s on an island in Lake Erie. http://stonelab.osu.edu/
Stevens has some shorter engineering programs. Also the location is awesome so that’s a plus
