+1000 words, too many?

Since there isn't a maximal word limit for common app essay, what is the average? is +1000 too many?

Yes, 1000+ is too many.

Aim for 500-700.

mine was 764. 750 is a good number to aim for imo

There has been a lot of discussion about the length of essays.

Here is a recent one
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-essays/933894-how-long-too-long.html

You can search for more discussions. In general, the shorter the better. Aim for 500 and you probably will be over a little.

1000 means you could easily cut 2-300 words and have the essay come out looking better.

I think it really depends on how important every paragraph is. There are a bunch of samples that are very long but not wordy.

It’s not that they’re wordy, its that longer essays tend to try to cover too many ideas and end up losing focus.

Cutting it down forces you to really think about what you are trying to say, and which parts of your essay are getting this message across most effectively.
