If you're a national merit finalist, you can get $1000/year renewable scholarship for four year stay at Rice.

My question: If one is a national merit finalist and has got $2,500 one-time scholarship from National Merit Corporation, is he/she eligible to get $1000/year renewable scholarship from Rice?

Whoever knows the FACT(either you or your friend has this experience) please response. No offense. Those that don't know the fact please do NOT reponse.

email fina@rice.edu if you REALLY want a 100% accurate answer

Read the link. the $1000 is from RICE. The $2500 is from NMC… different sources. Rice will give you $1000 if you are a NM finalist AND you declared Rice as your first choice

You don’t get the $1,000 per year if you are getting any sort of tuition grant (need-based aid) from Rice. They simply take the money and apply it towards your grant.

The NMC’s rules are that you get EITHER a NM Scholarship OR a college sponsored scholarship, if you’re already a NMS it looks like you’re not going to be able to get the 1k a year from Rice, which would be taken out of any grants they’re already giving you.

Yes, what schee410 said is correct. According to the NMSC website, one of the requirements to receive the $1,000/year scholarship from Rice is that you “have not been offered any other National Merit Scholarship (corporate-sponsored, National, or another
college-sponsored award). No student will receive more than one scholarship offer from NMSC.”

I didn’t receive a NM $2,500 scholarship, so I was able to get the college-sponsored one from Rice. According to a letter I received, “NMSC transmits stipend checks to scholarship recipients through their colleges… scholarship funds are not due to NMSC from sponsors until August 31.”

I agree with silentsailor. It does seem messed up since the renewable $1,000/year is obviously greater than the NM $2,500.

Email financial aid and explain your situation (the $2500 NMS) and ask them if they would be willing to continue the scholarship in the following years at the $1000 level. They may do so; they are quite flexible about some things…
