If I won the 2,500 dollar thing from National Merit, will I lose the 1,000 a year from Rice?
If so that kinda sucks.
Thanks

Nope, I believe you get both…that much closer to paying for college :)

Madshock is incorrect. Its a NM rule that you can only get one award. If you search the Rice thread you’ll see several others have posted about this before

@OP: It depends on whether or not you are receiving any other financial aid, as far as which is the better “deal.”

The one-time NM $2,500 award is treated as an outside scholarship, and therefore reduces the portion of your aid that is self-help (loans/work-study.)

If you receive Rice’s own NM $1,000 annual award, it actually replaces any scholarship/tuition grant FIRST, so it wouldn’t help at all.

If you are paying full tuition, with no aid or scholarships, then the $1,000 award is better. If this is the case, you might want to explore declining the $2,500 award and opting for the $1,000 award from Rice if you’re sure that you want to go to Rice. I would get it in writing though (from Rice) since the response is due to NMSC by April 7th.

I agree that it is not a particularly good deal, since most other schools try to match these awards. Wash-U, for example, matches the $2,500 for years 2, 3 and 4.

^ Givings is correct . . . except the Rice NM is not a given. They “may” give it to you, maybe not. There is a long thread on CC-Rice about this.

Nope - I think it is a sure thing. In the other thread, the OP was awarded the $2500 one-time deal, and was upset about not getting the $1000 a year…

^ But in that thread, it was made clear to the dad when he questioned it that it was considered, not guaranteed. Or, did I read it wrong?

I think he may have interpreted it wrong…
