Amount of Money for Natl. Merit Finalists?

hi guys, i know on the rice site it says $750-$2000 annually. just wondering whether the amount they'll actually give falls on the low or high end of that spectrum. any current rice students who were national merit finalists? also, can you get the national merit scholarship and another one from rice, like say the trustee one? in other words, is the national merit scholarship guaranteed to you if you are a finalist?

wow, lotta questions. thanks for your responses in advance!

it falls all over the spectrum i guess. i have only heard of people getting $750 or $2000, though. i can't remember what i got since it's not very large... i feel like it was $750. yes you can get other scholarships. you are asking a different thing with whether it is guaranteed, and maybe it is, i'm not sure. it's not a big amount and i'm sure it helps in admissions so it is not a waste.

Is the National Merit scholarship info included in the acceptance letter or is the exact number given separately?

I can answer all of these questions. Rice National Merit Scholarships are awarded by the University according the the National Merit Scholarship Corporation schedule. As long as you follow the deadlines, you won't miss out on your money. Also, Rice's NMS is only $750/yr ($3,000 total) because so many students here get it. I think that 1/3, 1/2, or 2/3 of students have it (I apologize, I really have no idea). Regardless, there are too many NMScholars for them to offer more money unless you qualify for need-based aid, in which case they might raise your NMS award (this might be uncommon and, honestly, is a way to mix need and merit (as opposed to need-blind merit) (BTW I like this idea, I'm not condemning it)).

Yes, Rice will give you as many scholarships as they want to. Getting NM is the most common and is hardly related to receiving the other two big ones (Trustee's and CenturySchol). You will find out about these other (non NMS) scholarships with your admissions letter. For me, they were on the last pages.

Good luck.
