The second line is a procession of New Orleans jazz players doing their thing. It originated, I believe, with the famous jazz funerals of New Orleans, but it has come to mean any jazz procession of that sort associated with a celebration. I don't know the details on why it is called the "second Line", but I would speculate that during the funerals, which were only for the most respected jazz musicians of New Orleans originally, the horse and buggy with the casket was the first line, or perhaps it was the family and mourners, or both, and then the musicians were the second line.

This, at least, is how I have always heard it and so without research I will wildly put it out there to perpetuate the truth or the myth, whichever it may be. What cannot be disputed, though, is that it is another thing that is "Only in New Orleans. Only at Tulane". I can justify the Tulane part as true for bright university students, anyway. You sure won't get that at Harvard!

Curiouser - Thanks, glad I did start it, it is coming along nicely! Learned a thing ot two myself. I especially liked your add about chilling out on the Mississippi. I always told my family about doing that and I took my D there during Honors Weekend in March. Being from St. Louis back then, I would always go there shortly after returning to school and think about how I just saw that same water at home. Silly I know, but maybe there is something deep in there somewhere (no pun intended). I will leave that to you philosophy students.

Don' know if this warrants an add to the list as it's only a one time thing, but the dates for the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans just happen to coincide with one of the
Destination Tulane events.

Winchester - That's pretty cool. But I think you are right, it is a one time event, so hard to add to the list. Have a great time at Destination Tulane!! Here is the link you referenced:

Do not attend the university of tulane. They do not listen to students, only to the students parents (and even when it comes to that they still do not truly listen). I know from experience

wwvw, i would recommend you transfer away from Tulane. Seriously, all of your posts that you've made on CC have been about how much you hate Tulane. That's ok. You've had a bad experience and I would've hated TU if I had had a bad experience as well. I had a great one though so I stayed, got involved, and found a major that I loved and have built a career in. I actually transfered into Tulane and it worked out well for me. I just don't think you should stay at a school that is obviously making you miserable. Transfering is not hard to do, particularly if you were originally accepted to the university as a freshmen. You usually only have to send them your freshmen years grades at your current college and then fill out a quick form. Look into it.

"Do not attend the university of tulane. They do not listen to students, only to the students parents (and even when it comes to that they still do not truly listen). I know from experience"

wwvw -- you're obviously a very dissatisfied customer -- it happens. But what you're saying sounds like a personal problem. "They" don't listen to students -- who is "they." You're not adding anything of value to this site.

And in a post of yours in another thread, you complained about Tulane students not being as smart as test scores would indicate. Well if you're so smart, wherever you transfer to, you better get a better grip on grammar: "students parents" should be students' parents.

OK. after the distractions of the flamers, we need to get this going again.
