$10k needed?

Get the right documents – Study in Canada

From the article, what I'm gathering is that I need $10k to get into Canada. While that in itself is not the problem, I still am stumbling on understanding it (I want to go, as seen from my other posts, and I've made more sense of this journey since then).

Do I need to show bank statements and such that say I have a TOTAL of $10k?
OR can I show documents of my family's monthly income and similar?

I do know that I am going to have the support of my immediate family (namely, my mom). The tuition is covered, with grants and other aid, so that is not the bother. I don't think if I made half of that (which will be a lot easier than making the full amount) that I could still hope the border.

Also, while my hope still kindles (haha), I was wondering something else. If I proved enough to survive in Canada for a six-month period, and were able to work on campus and off campus, would that suffice?

Any understanding of this would wonderful, thank you.
