11th grade failure. Need wise suggestions/advice?

Okay so right now will be the summer after my 11th grade year of high school, which i failed. So basically I failed the 11th grade due to truancy. I have had some medical issues, which I have now gotten past.

OK so my 9th grade year I did pretty well, I got mid 80s to low 90s for all my classes. And my 10th grade year was slightly better with high eighties to mid 90s. Both of those years combined to a 90 GPA. So by far no means am I not capable of graduating or excelling in high school. I enjoyed being in high school while running for my cross country and track teams for every year. I really liked the people i was surrounded with and it helped me keep my mind off things at home while I could focus on my school work better. My Junior year I actually got promoted to a few honors classes. Like Honors Social Studies and Honors English as well as AP Spanish. But as my absences grew i eventually got kicked out of the AP Spanish. But I stopped going to school all together and just let the year pass by.

But putting all of that aside I’m just saying I know I am very well capable of excelling in school if i really put my mind to it and I really would like to go to a University without having to go spend 2 years at a community college but if i have to I will. So I am thinking of going back to high school. So what i really can’t decide on is if I should repeat the year of my Junior year and just continue until i graduate or just take the classes necessary for me to graduate next year as a senior and basically just graudate with enoough credits and go to a comminity college for 2 years because i doubt i can get into a University with minimum credits and a wrecked GPA. So I was thinking of transferring to another school and repeating the 11th grade and taking my SATs and everything as usual and apply to University without having to go to community college first. I want to transfer to another school so I don’t get picked on or getting self esteem destructed by any of the people in my original school. I just want to start fresh and continue with my life and hope I can get into a University even if i repeat a year. So here are these options I’m considering. Is it worth repeating the year at another school?

1.) Continue with my senior year and take the required junior classes and senior classes to graduate and just gain the minumin amoount of credit. But will most likely have to go to community college to raise GPA. (Since I’m able to graduate on time still since i have enough credits to not repeat a year.)

2.) Transfer to another school and repeat the year and get a fresh start with new people and a new school and get all the credits I would originally have gotten had I passed my Junior year and hopefully eventually apply to University my senior year

So I just want to know what’s best for my situation. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Repeat junior year. You haven’t learned a bunch of things. What state do you live in, as we could be more specific with advice.

I’m wondering if your school district has a continuation school, or some other program aimed at credit recovery. My daughter teaches at the continuation high school for our school district- it is a very small high school and is primarily for those kids who for whatever reason have not been able to succeed at their regular schools. Many of the kids there have fallen behind because of truancy. The school is set up to help them catch up and either return to their regular schools or let them graduate from the continuation school. Graduates are not able to go straight to a 4-year university because they haven’t taken the required classes, but many of the kids do go on to community colleges. The school and the classes are small, and the staff is much more nurturing than at a regular school. There seems to be a much more accepting environment among the students, maybe because so many have been through a lot and feel more of a bond with other students. You might check to see if your District has something similar.

It sounds like a CC might be a good option for you. I don’t know what your financial situation is, but CC would be more affordable and would also give time to get your studying habits back on track before transferring. Definitely follow up with your school to see what your options might be. Best of luck!!!

I live in NY.

Honestly the 2 years in CC will save you at about 20k, varies depending on the FA you get. You could try to transfer after one year of CC, but getting into state college will be a challenge. What are you interested in?

I’m interested in Finance.

I don’t have anything to add about the college situation, but just wanted to come give some words of encouragement. I can’t even imagine how hard it has been for you and how far you have come is truly amazing! Stay strong and you will get through this!

I think you should repeat junior year. I’ve just finished my junior year, and I think I’ve learned a lot of important things this year, even though my high school is terrible. My district has an alternative school for students with attendance issues, but unfortunately most drop out. You could see if your district has something like this. Your guidance counselor should be able to help you if you had a valid medical issue.

Although CC is a cheaper option, you may not be challenged. My CC is extremely easy, so I’m not considering it. If you have a more rigorous CC, it may not be a terrible idea. I think it would be hard to get into a 4-year college with these attendance and academic issues, though. Good luck!

Repeat junior year.Take challening classes and no matter how you feel, go to class. Even if you sleep in class - don’t miss. Period.
Have your medical issues been verified and treated?
