Next year, I’m not sure whether or not to take AP Chem or AP Physics 1. I just took Honors Chemistry this year, so if I don’t take AP chem, It might be harder to relearn later. However, if I do not take AP Physics 1, I won’t be able to take AP Physics C senior year. Does AP chemistry or AP physics sound like a better option?
–> 1. AP Chemistry ??
2. AP US history
3. AP BC calculus
4. AP Lang
5. AP chinese
6. Journalism

What are you thinking about studying in college? That might guide you as to whether you should take physics or chemistry.
That being said, it’s recommended to have at least a year of physics on your transcript in high school as well as chemistry, but from what I presume, you’ve already taken chem and not physics yet.
Plus it’d be easier to try to relearn the honors chemistry material than it would be to try to learn a whole year’s worth of material in order to skip over Physics I and take Physics C. You could always take both AP Chem and Physics C in your senior year.
I’m still not 100% sure on what I want to study in college yet and if I take AP chem next year, I would have to take Physics 1 senior year, making me unable to take Physics C.
For 12th grade, I plan to take:
- AP Macro/Micro econ
- AP Statistics
- Journalism
- AP Lit
- AP Psychology
- AP Physics 1?? or AP Physics C??
- if I take AP chem in 11th grade, I would have to take Physics 1 in 12th
- if I take Physics 1, I would be able to take either Physics C, AP Bio, or AP Chem 12th grade
My school requires that we take a physics class so I would have to take one sometime in the next two years, but I cannot take any classes over the summer because my schedule is too busy
Do you really want to take AP Physics C? If so then do the first option. If not, do the AP Chem junior year and AP Physics 1 senior year. Colleges like to see at least 3 years of a lab science, so biology, chemistry, and physics-all at least once. If you have that it doesn’t really matter then what else you take. Take which interests you more or what goes better with your future intended major/future career.
Physics1+ C if you want to be an engineer, AP Chem + Physics1 if you think you’ll be premed, any combination if you’re not going to major in science.
You need 1 year each of bio, chem, and physics, plus one AP in those if possibe - anything else is “extra”.
The problem I see is with your 12th grade schedule, as presented:
- AP Macro/Micro econ => good
- AP Statistics => replace with a math class in community college. Pick among Multivariable Cal/Calc3, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Math
- Journalism => good, since you’ve taken the class before, shows commitment and gives a personal touch to your schedule
- AP Lit => lots of readings, so may be overkill with the rest of your schedule AND applications; on the other hand, if you love to read, it can show intellectual curiosity and versatility when the transcript combines with its math equivalent, Calc BC.
- AP Psychology => nice, good “easy” AP
- AP Physics 1?? or AP Physics C?? or AP Chem => all good
The problems are with the Math (you should really try to take one semester above Calc BC, not “drop down” to Statistics) and with the intensity of AP Lit to combine with applications.
Thanks everyone!
Do you think it would be too difficult if I just took AP Physics 1 next year, and if I don’t want to take AP Physics C, to just go back to AP Chemistry?
No it shouldn’t be. A lot of the AP Chem material would seem familiar to you in 12th grade after taking Honors Chem. Taking AP Physics 1 should give you more flexibility to take either AP Chem or Physics C in your senior year—whichever you choose.
You’d have to brush up on chem before the Fall, so keep those notebooks
