For those who applied (and got in) to a top US university, what were your 11th marks? My 10th marks are fine, my 12th half yearlies are fine too, but my 11th final is like 60%. That effectively kills my whole application to many colleges that I'd like to apply to.

Also, how is GPA calculated for Indian students? My school (DPS RKP) doesn't rank, and the transcripts it sends does not have any grade/GPA, just percentages. So if, for example, the average GPA of an MIT admit is 3.8, does that include Indian students? (3.8 = 95% ? No one gets 95% =/ )

No decile rank. Just the highest marks, and the class average. I’m above the class average, but definitely not the highest. That doesn’t much help though. It doesn’t provide my rank.

Yea… Though I quit my JEE classes towards the end. My school happens to be ridiculously competitive though, so I was quite proud of my 60%… (I hadn’t thought of applying abroad then)

I don’t many Indian schools that rank or give a GPA. The Yale admissions officer said that it is actually a big plus that we don’t have class ranks or GPA coz it gives our application a lot more “wiggle room”.

blue box- don’t worry about your marks, they’re ok. Apply away!!

Blue_box - I am a DPS student as well and I scored a 55+ % in grade 11 . I think you can ask the school registrar to put up the class rank on the transcripts (as I was 10th in my class out of 60+ students) .

Id prefer it if class rank wasnt put up on my mark sheet actually. I dont know my exact rank, but its definitely not something as good as 10 out of 60. I asked my school counselor and she gave several examples of people who got 60s-70s in 11th and got into MIT, Princeton, and Stanford. There seems to be hope for me after all. =)

Hey blue_box, I know how hard 11th in DPS RKP can be, I got like a 40% in my half yearlies, after a 90% in my boards! And the class rank with all the externals, would most definitely not be good, so its best to not get that put on the transcript. But I think if you have good SAT scores, and good marks in all the other grades, then it should not be much of a problem. Ultimately all it comes down to, is the ECA’s, essays, recs… etc. since nearly everyone applying to MIT from India has pretty comparable scores.
