'12: Who else DYING to know which college they're in???

I AM.

Unlike many others, I wouldn't mind being in Stiles or Morse (cause Durfee is amazing and the location of the actual college is great: next to the bookstore, all the good food, and the Payne Whitney gym)

I JUST WANT TO KNOW.

anyone else? i kind of wish i were a legacy so I'd know already :D

Yea definitely! Overall it seems like every student in whatever college ends up loving it...the one I want the most is probably Branford b/c it's everywhere in the brochures and looks gorgeous (even though pretty much all of the colleges are beautiful...even Stiles with its abstract modern look)

Now that graduation is over and the grad parties are winding down :)………my D is anxious to know which residential college she will be assigned. She also wants to know who her roommate and suite mates are and how the suite is configured.

You'd best wish you're in berkeley!

Seriously, berkeley was my first choice even when i was a pre-frosh (i was just looking back at the list i made a year ago, and it made me happy to see my college on top), and i was SOO lucky to get in. It's legitimately the best college, imho.

Being a legacy has an impact on the college you're put in? Crap... I guess that means I'll be in Davenport...

I thought Davenport was one of the sought after (more desirable) residential colleges.

If you're a legacy, you can indicate a preference into or specifically NOT into your relative's college.

(And of course kwijiborjt is mistaken about BK. Of course JE is the best college. LOL)

Davenport's pretty high up on my list... if i had legacy in Dport i'd definitely request to be put in there.

And, well, let's let JE people think they're in a desirable college. They have so little to celebrate besides a big pile of money, and even that can't seem to fix their college...

^^ what are you talking about? the newly renovated JE is going to be amazing next year.

and when that big pile of money pays for free [and frequent] pizza parties, catered friday dinners, gelato, trips to the opera, philharmonic, wine tasting, ballet, musicals, etc. in NY (expensive dinners included), fellowships, and much more, I think we have a lot to celebrate. :P

Are some residential colleges more heavily endowed (financially) then others?

yah, i've always heard that JE is the richest

JE has its own private endowment, the only college to have one. There was a court case where Yale tried to absorb JE's endowment, but the attempt failed. Subsequently, Yale closed the loophole that allowed colleges to have their own endowment.

they told me what college i was in when i called client accounts to ask about my netID, read it right off the list. especially awesome since my college will be being renovated during my freshman year while i'm in old campus hopefully!

calhoun '12 FTMFW. ^_^

Each of you will be in the best residential college at Yale.

I actually think the perception that "every student thinks they're in the best college" is a bit of propaganda. Tour guides and brochures love to sport that phrase, and most of the people who orient/work with pre-frosh/frosh are encouraged to make that claim, but I think the student body as a whole is a bit more pragmatic.

I don't know anyone who really dislikes their college or who decided to transfer for non-social reasons, but similarly, a lot of people are willing to acknowledge the flaws of their particular college. Particularly my friends in Morse, Stiles, Calhoun, JE, and (to a lesser extent) Trumbull always joked about the perceived desirability of their colleges and some of the negative aspects that formed such perceptions. All of them like the quirks of their colleges, but none that I can think of would be willing to claim theirs was 'the best.' I was in Silliman, and honestly there is no college I would rather have been assigned to, but I certainly realize that my college's location was not as central as Berkeley's or Saybrook's and that the food was probably not in the top 3 (though I would rank it in the top 6).

There is no perfect college for everyone and a great deal of people will fail fall head over heels for their particular college. Not everyone can expect to love their college or even prefer it over others, but it almost certain that you will at least come to like and appreciate the one to which you're assigned. Realistically some people do move off campus or transfer because life in their particular college doesn't suit them, but the fact that these individuals are are a small minority is reason enough to be confident that you will be happy no matter where you're placed. That is part of the magic of Yale.

Well, mine wasn't perfect, but it was the best.
