1370 on SAT :(

I found out I got a 1370 on the SAT today...

500 Critical Reading
450 Math
420 Writing

I am not pleased at all and am scheduled to retake it in January. Is it an average score?

Now, I feel like I can do better. I am not making excuses (well, maybe hahaha) but I had to walk through flooded football field to get to the test because it was pouring (Florida, yeah) and the entire time my shoes were soaked, i was cold, and I was tired.

I am still waiting for my ACT scores. Let me know what you think!

No need to comment if you have something nasty to say. I understand it is not good, but please do not insult me.

1370 is not a good score, I’m sorry. And I’m not one of those CC nerds who think scores only 2100+ are good (I have an 1840 myself haha), but 1370 will not cut it for many universities. Are you a junior and a senior? I hope to God you’re not a senior. If not, then you have a lot of time to improve your score.

I got like a 2010 in eighth grade. Aren’t you just a bucket full of sunshine?

@MagicalMalik, thank you for the positive reply. I will be retaking it two more times. The first one I did not study at all so I will be studying for the next two.

@Carin, please do not spam my threads with worthless comments.

@Everyone, I have a GPA of 2.8 (not the best, I know) but have a lot of extracurriculars including Varsity Football, Basketball, Baseball, Model UN, Community Service, Student Government, etc  Hopefully that will help with colleges.

Just do a bunch of practice tests, getting a low score now is nothing to worry about.

If you have time to take it a couple more times, you will absolutely end up with a score you are happy with

Right, not a good score. Well if your a senior I don’t see the huge point in retaking it two more times since most schools deadlines are either early Jan or Feb. Make sure the schools you intend to apply to will accept your Jan testing and Feb testing.

MConstant, are you a junor?

1370 I don’t think that’s very good. The average is 1500.

1370 is the national average range I think. My advice would be learn vocab and brush up your math skills.

Carin: most schools, unfortunately, are not interested in your extracurricular activities. The ones that are interested in ECs are highly selective (probably 3.5+ GPA, 1800+ SAT).

Statistically, a 1370 is below national average. That doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s all relative to a person’s capabilities. With that said, I think most if not all people can significantly improve upon a 1370.

For starters, here is an immediate way to see your writing score spike. Review this webpage; it is almost everything you need to know about the grammar portion of the writing section: [SAT: Improve SAT Score with SparkNotes: The Seven Deadly Screw-Ups](http://www.sparknotes.com/testprep/books/newsat/chapter8section3.rhtml)

As for critical reading, there are several habitual things you can do. Always look up words you do not know that you come across while reading anything (newspaper, novel, textbook, web article, ANYTHING). There are several vocab lists out there of frequent SAT words; you might have to browse around but they are on the web. As for the reading comprehension, remember that the answer to every question is literally in the text. Avoid making interpretations; this will only confuse you and drag your score down.

I cannot offer much help for the math section; I never prepared for it myself. Obviously you can, just like for all the other sections, review the blue book (it is IMPERATIVE (<- look that up!) that you buy this). Best of luck. This whole website is a great resource for SAT help.

Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice! Then some more. I like McGraw-Hill’s book. 10 practice tests! That should be a start.

for vocab, get the Direct Hits book- you can find it on Amazon. If it doesn’t help you on CR, it’ll definitely help you on your essays. have hope! i brought my score from a 1510 to a 2310, even if i did have a longer period of time to study ((:
goodluck!

Monstor…
What were you implying by addressing your comment to me?

I’m assuming this was a typo… right?

i was wondering whether the OP is a junior or a senior as well? oddly enough, he/she hasn’t showed up in the thread ever since the thread was posted.

@mconstant please come back, we are trying to help.

I was slightly turned off the the site thanks to Carin. I honestly could care less what he/she got on the SAT and it could do without the sarcastic little remarks.

I am a Senior. I am pretty sure I did poorly because I was completely distracted and did not study. I have two more sessions for the SAT coming up and have already been accepted to some colleges. Most of the colleges I have applied to say they are taking holistic approaches to admissions so extracurricular will probably help along with my volunteer work with dementia patients and at the local homeless shelter and church on thanksgiving and Christmas.

Being sleep-deprived, wet, and stressed out can and probably did have a very detrimental effect on your performance. Please don’t be too hard on yourself, because you have potential to do so much better. Just by being optimistic, sleeping, eating a healthy breakfast, and studying up on my worst subject (math urrrggh), I was able to go up 300 pts, and you can do even better. You know why? 'cause you’re going to study more! and you will be perseverant and dedicated, and you’ll believe in yourself. you can definitely do it. andd I agree that Carin is an idiot–honestly, no one gives a crap.

This is probably coming off as overly-optimistic haha but trust me, because I got really sad, and felt rather hopeless, thinking my score was unchangeable, but I was wrong.

I got the College Board blue book for 21$, which I think helped a lot! it has 10 practice tests, it’s great. I also read up the whole geometry SAT section on sparknotes, and some others for the math section. Sparknotes is very helpful, and has loads of study guides for the SAT. For the reading section, I’m in AP lit, and all the books my teacher has assigned me to read have been amazing, with a lot of SAT words on them. I recommend Catch-22, Crime and punishment, Inferno, Jane Eyre, and Candide. These are all very interesting books, which will definitely improve your reading comprehension, and for the most part provide you with more SAT words than you’ll want to see. I really liked all of those books, except for Inferno!

I wish you the best! Have a merry christmas!

Sorry Carin, I meant to address that to the OP; not sure why I mentioned your name. You may want to tone down on the arrogance though…

I don’t know about you. But I rather have 1380 than not having any scores! I need my scores by Jan 1. And they are still NOT OUT YET!!! I’m so gonna be screwed. :(

Back to topic, you still have time to retake. It seems you are not going to college next year so sit tight. Because if you are, you wouldn’t have time to take the January test, do you?

I sent an email to collegeboard and all it does is give me pointless responses… :(

No you’re not. Just relax. If you took the test in December then there should be no problems on your part with your application. Universities are now off on holidays, and will be back on Monday 4 Jan. I am sure you’ll have your scores by then

That’s good to know. :)
