1510 New SAT for Yale and Other Questions

Hi CC,

I’m a senior and here to ask if a 1510 with an 8/7/7 essay score (single-sitting) on the New SAT would hold me back for admission into Yale. My breakdown includes a 770 CR/W and a 740 Math score - I’m primarily interested in the humanities and intend on applying as an English major.

I understand that the SAT is only part of the holistic application process but was wondering how my score factors into the equation. CompassPrep released a chart in late July with the score ranges for colleges converted into the New SAT and had Yale’s 25th-75th percentile at 1480-1600 (http://www.compassprep.com/college-profiles-new-sat/). How accurate do you think this chart is?

Also, I understand that Yale superscores the SAT but also requires it with the essay. If I decide to retake the test in October (I’m planning on applying SCEA) but am already satisfied with my essay score would I have to retake the SAT w/ essay or can I simply do without the essay?

Thank you and I hope you all have a pleasant Labor Day!

Also forgot to note- I currently have 2 SAT Subject Test scores that I’m happy with and will not need to retake those(although I know SAT II’s are not absolutely required) and so am open to retaking the SAT in October if needed. Thanks again!

SAT scores are only one part of the equation. You can look at the Common Data Set (Yale University) to see where your scores land you. Remember, this is one of the first years for the new (I guess old) exam, so definitive answers may not be forthcoming. Good luck in where ever you land. With those scores, you will be a success anywhere.
