4 units- chem 1a (took chemistry as a soph in high school)
4- math 1a (did calc ab soph yr, calc bc jr yr, & calc d/linear alg sr yr & received a 3 on the bc exam & for the ab subscore)
3- engineering 10
1- mech engineering seminar
4- theater r1a

16 total

am i going to die, or suffer severe pain?

nah, I think quite a few freshman take 16 units

you've already taken calc 3 and you're going back to 1a??

Skip as much math as you possibly can. It'll make you feel good.

Everything Tastybeef said.

Maybe you could tutor me . . . :)

If you're going to be starting from 1A, then you really need to take that many units your first semester, because you need to take 1B concurrent with Physics 7A next semester, etc. I think you will find Chem 1A quite difficult/time consuming if you haven't had chemistry since 10th grade.

rofflez-im going back because i dont feel confident enough to skip. plus i figured it'd be a better ease into berkeley. an engineer i know who just graduated from berkeley said if you can really master 1a, engineering will be a bit easier

plus if i skip, i dont want it to haunt me. cuz since you need 1b with physics 7a, i dont wanna struggle with 7a when i had just jumped into 1b or to 53

thanks everyone else!!

Math 1A is a joke compared to other engineering classes. I don't think mastering Math 1A will make anything easier. If anything, "mastering" Math 1A just tells you that you've wasted a semester taking this class.

what's with the nick name copy catting? (tastybeef related to tasteb33f?)

its your first semester at one of the most challenging universities in the country. uc merced-16units= No Problem. UC BERKERLY-16units=Good Luck. I would tweak it a bit.

rofflez:

i'm the O mutha effin G.

O damn, the battle between the tastyb**f 's.

That's well and good, but you'd need to provide an alternate schedule with fewer units. Engineering majors have lots of prereqs to meet. Next semester OP has to take Math 1B and Physics 7A and r1B and whatever else, right?

I think the above schedule will be VERY difficult, especially if OP goe 3s on the AP math tests. But there may not be an alternative.

tastybeef- well that same engineer who skipped to math 1b had to drop other classes just to stay in that one, & almost got behind. he told me

"I for one went straight to Math 1B and it was really REALLY hard because I came in very unprepared with what the professors already expected all the students to know. I went to hours of out-of-classroom tutoring just to catch up and I only had 3 courses that semester. I felt hella spent afterwards, and took an even lighter load the next semester. (Which kind of just delayed my course plan towards graduation.)

As just a general recommendation, I would definitely advise to start fresh with Math 1A, get used to the pace that Berkeley expects from you, and then go from there. Especially with Math, it's very important that you really learn how to do Math the Berkeley way. The Math department here is the best in the nation, and the professors here really know their stuff, and if you manage to get that down, the rest of the Mechanical Engineering curriculum will be a piece of cake. "

i guess i just don't want to risk that.

Phoobah- yea, if it is way too challenging, ill take summer school & drop something i guess.

kenf1234- am i OP? haha. but yea... engineers have it tough... math 1b & physics will NOT be fun... gah. & yea i guess summer school, or an extra semester, is always an alternative

I'm taking math 1b, physics 7a, chem 4b english r5b.. next semester.. ahhh ~

math 1b & physics 7a dont sound fun together at all ):
