16 year old Summer Job?

I'm 16, a rising junior in high school. I have three months to kill... and I'm looking for something.

I have strong office skills, though I hate office work. (I can write title insurance, use Microsoft Word, Excel, type very quickly/ about 70 wpm.) I worked in a law office for my parents and I've grown up going to their office.

So I'm wondering... should I see if any of my dad's friends (who are lawyers) would be willing to take me on as an intern? It's not something that I do not enjoy at all, in fact, I HATE it... but then there's the side that it looks good for college and gets me out of the house.

Or should I try to find a job at a grocery store/fast food joint like other 16 year olds? (Something which I would prefer).

BTW, I have about four years of experience working in a law office.

Can a normal “public” teen work at a law firm or do I have to “work under the table”? I also have 70+ WPM too (I was the fastest typer in middle school and the computer teacher always bragged to her new students about my typing skills).

Get out that spatula and get to flipping burgers. It builds character.

(Honestly you’d probably make more money at a law office and it’d look better on applications/resumes/what have you, but if that doesn’t work out go ahead and get a crappy job so in three years when you’re not wanting to go to that 8am class for the third time this week you can motivate yourself by saying ‘At least I’ll never have to do THAT again!’)

If I tried to get an internship at a law office, I’d do it pro-bono.

So… I’d get more money with a crappy job. XD

Unless they offered to pay me? But I wouldn’t ask for tha.t The current economy is crappy and lawyers don’t make enough money anyways.

Try to learn to enjoy any work that you do.

I think that using connections for getting work (paid or unpaid) is fine. It shows resourcefulness and you may learn things in the job in the way of useful life skills and attitudes. There are lots of jobs where a good percentage of the job is doing things that are rather mundane and a positive and interesting attitude can make mundane jobs more interesting.
