17 Credit Max for Freshmen semester?

Ok, at orientation when making my schedule, I was signing up for a core class, bringing me up to 18 credits when the advisor came around and told me that freshmen were prohibited from taking more than 17 in the fall semester, but with my major, aerospace engineering, and my college park scholars colloquium, this means that i cant work towards my core at all until spring. now that i've finished orientation, can i go back on testudo and sign up for a core and if i can, do you recommend doing this at all?

S. is also in scholars and took 17 credits both semesters last year (so basically 5 "real" courses-- one was worth 4 credits-- plus the scholars colloquiium). i wouldn't recommend any more than that.

i have only 4 "real" classes and 2 one credit intro classes, one for schoalrs and another for my major, so thats why i'm kinda debating over this because my schedule feels a bit light.

5 "real" classes isn't unmanagable, and you're probably able to register for the last one either over the summer now or within the first week of classes (during the add/drop period). the question is whether you want to take that many classes your first semester. will you come in with any credits that might take care of some core classes? if you do, you might not have to start working on core credit your first semester on campus (though they do suggest you do).

so i guess i have a bit more time to decide then. i am bringing in several ap credits but they'll only count 1 as a core but i'll keep an eye on testudo to see if any of the core classes i wanted get any more seats or will fit into my schedule better this summer. thanks everyone for all the info and advice!

I'm an orientation advisor for the engineering school and I believe that freshmen are not allowed to register for more than 17 for your first semester. I also believe that the restriction moves up to 18 credits once you're here for a semester. However, on the first day of classes, you are allowed to register for up to 20 credits - though this might be restricted for freshmen. Any more than that requires paperwork. I would email your school's advising office or give them a call if you're still interested in knowing.

I actually think that 15 credits is a good number to take your first semester.

The credit max for students depends on the college. Most colleges cap it at 16 unless you get an exemption from your advisor (which is really annoying)--Engineering has a higher cap of 18 (and also you can get exemptions a little more easily if you're in a special program like Honors and/or you get good grades).
