CORE requirements?

My orientation is coming up soon, and I need to plan what classes I should sign up for. I have a map of courses for the Engineering school, but I need to figure out how to get in all the CORE requirements as well.

The classes I'm hoping to sign up for are:
CHEM 135
MATH 140 (required)
ENES 100 (required?)
UNIV100 Sections 1301 or 1302

Would it be too much for me to add a fifth class to meet the CORE? I am exempt from English 101 so I don't have to worry about that.

Also, I read something in the Diamondback about how they were getting rid of the CORE. Does anyone have any more information about that?

Well you don’t have to take all your CORES first semester, or even the first year. CORE also includes an HA, an HL, and then one more HA/HL/or HO. You also need an SB and SH. Unless any of these things will be fulfilled by major requirements. Were you exempt from science? CORE includes a Lab and a non-lab science. CHEM135 might count for something though I don’t see it on the list. And one of the CORE classes you take should be a Diversity course as well or you’ll have to take an additional class just for that.

Are you taking the lab with CHEM135? Because you’ve only got 12 credits there, 11 without the lab. So taking another 3-credit class should be fine. Most freshmen take 14-15. 15-16 is standard for a normal semester anyway.

You can check Testudo for all the CORE class options for each category http://www.sis.umd.edu/bin/soc?crs=core&term=201108

Yeah, I’m taking the lab. I’m not exempt from science, but I will be taking PHYS 270/271 sometime in my sophomore year. From the website, it looks like I will get CORE credit for PHYS 270/271, so that’s my Lab. ENES 100 covers the non-lab science.

I’ve got the Gemstone class, which is one credit, so here’s what I’m trying to get:

CHEM 135 (3 credits)
CHEM 136 (1 credit)
ENES 100 (3 credits)
GEMS 100 (1 credit)
MATH 140 (4 credits)
UNIV 100 (1 credit)
AASP 202 (3 credits) <– Am I allowed to take this class? This is going to sound dumb, I guess, but it starts with a ‘2’ so I don’t know if I’m allowed to take it freshmen year, even though it doesn’t have any prerequisites. Most of the Diversity of classes that start with ‘1’ are full or restricted to freshman, so I’m kind of confused about that. lol

With that schedule, I have 16 credits total.

Yeah you can take a 200-level class. They’re just supposed to be a little more difficult than 100-level but all 100/200 are lower-level and are used to satisfy CORE and program requirements and such. That’s a good schedule then, as long as you think you can handle 16 credits your first semester. But something like UNIV100 won’t be a lot of work at all, I don’t know about GEMS100 but since it’s 1-credit it can’t be that much work.

It shouldn’t be too bad; I just won’t be partying as hard as the other freshmen. Thanks for your help. =)

Sure thing. Good luck with registration!

Just in case, you should take a look at other classes that meet core (or your major’s) requirements…in the event that one or more of these classes are not available at a workable time/day for you.

Having some other ideas in your back pocket will make the registration process a lot smoother.

You don’t need UNIV100 and GEMS100. They are the same class, just the GEMS one incorporates Gemstone things and is required for incoming freshman to the program.
