17 Units too many?

Hello,
I am doing my freshman year at my community college this fall and for the record I plan on being full time and no work outside of the school.
Analytic Trigonometry (4) - RateMyProfessor said lots of homework
English 100 (3) - Night Class - Moderate homework RateMyProfessor
Principles of Macro Economics (3)
ACTG 121 - Financial Accounting (4)
Bus 100 - Introduction to Business (3)
Which is 17 units. What do you guys think?

That is a challenging first semester. The math, Econ and accounting classes will all be difficult. It helps that you are not working, but that said, taking 17 credits your first semester is a little unusual. Were you a strong student in high school? Do you have good time management and study skills? Remember that college classes move much more quickly than high school classes; generally speaking, you will cover in one semester what you did in a whole year of high school.

You also want to be careful about starting out with a low GPA. You don’t want to dig yourself a hole that you will find hard to get out of at the beginning of your academic career.

You can always register for 17 credits and see how the first week or two goes. Usually you will have several weeks to withdraw from a course without your transcript being affected. Pay attention to your school’s dates, however, because after the first withdrawal date you will receive a “W” on your transcript if you withdraw. A few "W"s are ok but you don’t want to accumulate a bunch.

@blprof I would say I was a good student in High School, I did get a 3.4 and got accepted into a few CSUs but I decided on CC because I believe I can do better. I was recommended 17 by a conselor because the Math is only csu transferrable and Ill be -4 units by the time I reach the time to transfer so I had to make up the 4 from the math but I guess I can drop the Introduction to Business (I dont really need it for IGETC or PreReq I just thought it’d be interesting) and the night class for english should help manage my week but I guess your right. Thanks! Follow up question, you believe if I took an online course over the summer is ok? I don’t know much about them but Im worried how testing etc will go since im traveling.

Can you just travel before or after the semester? I would not recommend an online class while traveling over the summer.

Now this was a VERY long time ago, but I thought that same thing as you when I started CC. Five classes seemed totally doable since we always had at least that in high school. I quickly learned that five college classes is not the same as five high school classes. I dropped one (or maybe even two, I don’t recall) by the drop date, and all was well. Oh, but that was when CC was free, so cost was not an issue. Is there a point where you can drop and get the tuition refunded? Don’t sacrifice your grades by taking on too much. I say, though, give it a shot and drop in time if it’s not working.
