Thinking of Taking 19 Units at Community College, Too Much?

So I've had a change of career paths, but don't want to get set back time-wise. So, I'm trying to pack all my units into 2 full semesters and over the summer so that I can transfer to a CSU by Spring 2011. This Spring I plan on taking 19 units (I took 12 units Fall 09 and have all A's, with a total of 43 units and a 4.0 GPA overall as well). These are the classes I'm going to enroll in:

Intermediate Algebra (4 units)
Philosophy- Critical Thinking (3 units)
Political Science (3 units)
Elementary Nutrition (3 units)
Meteorology (3 units)
The Legal Environment of Business (3 units)

All are online except math and the business class. I've taken a ton of online classes and they work best for me. I'll be taking 7 units over the summer and another 16-19 over Fall 2010, so that I can have GE and Business Admin. major prereq's out of the way for a transfer to CSU Spring 2011. I don't work, and don't plan on it while I'm in Community College (maybe 10-20 hours/week in the future, if it works). Does this sound doable?

Those are not hard classes, it should be time consuming but not difficult for you to get good grades in those classes.

If you were taking three high level math and science classes plus other classes, then it would be a problem.

Not at all. As a matter of fact I’m doing the same thing, I’m beefing up on the hardest classes available at my community college so I can stand a chance at the Ivy League schools and the other prestigious schools I’m applying to. I even tried to convince them to let me take 22 credits.

So no, just be confident!

Most CSUs are NOT accepting Spring Transfers. Even if your target CSU is one of the few (are any?) currently taking Spring Transfers it is highly likely they won’t next year. The CSUs are forced to take 40,000 less students over the next two years because of budget problems.

So, my advise is to take the classes over the 3 semesters since transfer is highly unlikely in the Spring anyhow.

As to whether or not 19 credits is too much, it depends on your strengths and weaknesses. For some people, an Algebra class is no big deal. For others, it would consume up to 1/2 or more of their study time. It also depends somewhat on what mix of classes are being taken… some classes are just more time consuming than others. I could whip through 19 credits of English Lit no problem but a slow reader or unconfident writer might struggle mightily. On the other hand, just 3 Math/Science classes would definitely max my time out because it is not my forte and I would need the extra time to master the topics.

Overall it is probably doable - but check out if your target CSU and safety CSU even takes Spring Transfers. You might be cramming for no major gain in the transfer timeline.

Lol that is a rather mickey mouse schedule… Im taking 20 units of much harder classes… Suck it up

It’s doable, just be prepared to have a lot of work. I’m currently taking 22.

Looks like you’re right. Spring transfer probably won’t be an option. I’ll probably take the same course load, and if in Spring 2011 I’m not able to transfer, there are a few more business classes I can take before I try transferring in Fall 2011. (BTW, I’m planning on transferring to Sonoma State and getting a B.S. with a concentration on Wine Business Strategies)

I’d have 60 transferable units and 30 GE transferable units.Would it be a dumb idea to transfer this Fall?

I know the classes I’m taking aren’t considered super difficult, kind of one of the reasons I picked them. I’m just trying to get through my GE classes without much hassle. I’ll be taking BAD 1, ECON 1A over summer–and Anthro. 1, ECON 1B, and Finite Math (and a couple easy GE classes) over Fall 2010.

im taking 19 units this semester and so far it has been easy.

Those don’t look terribly difficult so it should be doable. Time-consuming, but definitely doable.

i’m currently taking 24 units. not terribly hard. i have like the highest grade in all my classes. plenty of free time too. although i dont know why u like online classes. those are the worst
