Is 17 units doable?

I will be an incoming freshman at a CCC, and I’m a bit nervous about my schedule.
I feel like I can do it, but everyone is telling me that it’s going to be extremely difficult, and it’s making me doubt myself.
I will be taking:
Introduction to Microeconomics
History-4B: History of Civilization
English-13: Critical Reasoning and Writing
Math-10: Elementary Statistics
Elementary French I

Don’t take 17 units. Take 4 classes/12-13 units at the most your first semester. Maybe you should take one of them over the summer.

@goldencub Why is that? I’m taking an English class (College Composition and Writing) during the summer already.

17 units is a LOT of units, especially for a first semester college student. Start off slow, and add more classes (IF you even need them) when you’re able to. It’s less about you being able to handle it, and more about getting acclimated to how college is.

^Yep “It’s less about you being able to handle it, and more about getting acclimated to how college is.”

Plus, you can take that many units in your following semesters once you get acclimated. HS students (I know, I was one) tend to think college is just like HS, and you quickly learn that it is not. Sure, there are some parallels, but generally college is an adjustment. Profs grade on exams and papers only, no busy work to bump your grade. You don’t have to go to class (mostly), and lots of first year college students skip. The pressure is on you to learn, not the professor to teach.

I applaud your ambition, since it will serve you well down the road, but I second the caution against 17 units in your first semester. Allow yourself the time to adjust. College should be a little fun!

Just curious guys, why such the range in units? I have 3 classes per quarter that equal 15 units, straight through graduation. How are all 5 of these classes he listed add up to only 17? Is it just because my classes will be UD? At least 3 of those courses he’s taking are more difficult than some of my UD courses.

Just find it interesting and confused how they come up with these calculations.

Is this UCLA (quarter) or UCB (semester)?
@fullload, Im thinking it might be Berkeley. Their classes range from 3 - 4 units.

The OP is talking about CCC classes.

oh yeahhhhhh

15 units a semester is a full load. Taking 18 isn’t crazy. That being said, why not wait until the spring to shoulder a full burden?

Semester units are drastically different from quarter units @fullload - I think the rule is you divide by 1.5? So 15 units per quarter adds up to 45 quarter units per year, or 30 semester units per year. Schools on the semester system require 120 units to graduate, so… yeah, that’s it.

17 units isn’t a great way to start.

I did 18 units this past fall semester and it was absolute hell. I took three honors classes, a chemistry class, and a research methods class. I honestly cried myself to sleep so many nights throughout the semester. And this was my second year there, not my first, let alone not my first semester.

I wouldn’t recommend it.

@lbwaterpoloman 12 units is a full load.

At the very least try to take Econ online, its way easier that way and will make managing your schedule a whole lot better. And see if you can take an accelerated English class, some schools offer an 8 week night class. Thats pretty much what I did my first semester and for half the time I was really only taking 12 units which is pretty easy, the night classes go by fast and again online classes are super easy.

I didn’t see that he posted CC, sorry I thought he was talking about a UC for some reason, my bad.

I’ve done 30 units in a semester. It all comes down to time management and your ability to really concentrate in class. Try it out, and if it seems like too much, drop a class.

Now that I know what school the OP is talking about, yeah, that schedule is a little heavy, even for me. I took a minimum of 17 units per semester in CC, up to 21, but it’s all about class selection and those classes are difficult (French, Stats, Econ).

If you want to take that many units, split it into a couple hard and a couple easier courses. I’ve taken a few of those and though I did get A’s, they were difficult and I had to sacrifice a lot of hours to study.

Also don’t let others determine what you can or can’t do. People told me I was crazy to do 30 units and that it was impossible, but hey I did it with a 4.0. When they tell you you can’t, you show them you can. Simple doctrine I follow.

Cal, you did a 30 unit semester? Lol.

Must have been out of state, because no California CC, even with an appeal would allow 30 units in a semester. Come on, that’s like 10 classes. Lol.

@CaptainCal WHAT? 30 units? I’m calling nonsense tbh. Plus, even if you’re being real, was it your FIRST semester?
