hey, guysss. my 18th birthday is about 3 weeks away & i really want to do something fun because i've sort of blown off my last few birthdays. i live in nj, soo i was thinking of my friends & i taking a train in to the city. however, there would be probably around 10-15 of us & i thought that might be too many for such an excursion. plus, i'm a little nervous about the prospect of riding the train, just me & my girlfriends, because i'm not really familiar with the nyc area.

alsoo, i couldn't exactly think of what we could do there. some sort of shopping or other type of entertainment [dancing?], & then dinner at night? i heard there are some places for the 18+ crowd, but some of my friends are still 17...would this be a huge issue? also, i don't want this to be too expensive, at all. plus, i only have a few weeks to figure this whole thing out. ideas?! help!

NYC + Night Time fun = Expensive and 18+ / 21+.

You can be budget conscious but it’ll be hard to have a really ‘great’ time. Oh yeah, your friends being 17 would definitely be a deal breaker if your looking to get into anywhere really exclusive/cool. (if your not renting a place out)

My only suggestion is to rent a ‘party bus’ and take it around New York…(Times Square etc.) but that might also be on the expensive side.

Eating at night is surely not a problem…age or money. (Basically anywhere)

A couple people here are from the city so i’m sure they’ll be able to provide some answers.

what’s at 53rd & 6th? [oh god, the street names don’t make any sense to me : P]

& the train thing is no laughing matter. flashers…shudder

i was thinking of maybe this comedy/drag night [lucky cheng’s] might be kind of fun & different. i don’t know if my friends would be in to it, though. thoughts?

Times Square is not bad -_-
if you’re looking for a girls night out…it should be fun imo. There’s a ton of stuff you can do and i guess the drag night would be a decent idea, but depends really on your friends. a nice restaurant in the city would be nice to dine out. and party buses are reallly really expensive. I was going to say clubs possibly teen clubs, but i think there are better things to do out there. Shopping? Rockefeller center? Broadway show lol?

^haha I’ve never been to lucky chen’s but it sounds fun.

Anyway, times square is way way way crowded, so I guess link arms or use the buddy system as to not lose anyone out of the 15 if you plan to go :P

Yeahhh being 17, like someone said before, is pretty much a deal breaker. They’ll ask for IDs everywhere there’s an age limit.

I would suggest going to a nice food place Or doing karaoke in korea town.

p.s.- everything is more expensive in the city. so be prepared cash-wise.

You should take the train to Montreal instead… Only a few more hours away.
You can actually drink there, and as for your 17-year-old friends… clubs aren’t very strict ;)

lol, well, we’re not even really big in to drinking. actually, i don’t even drink : P

i’ve never really had an expensive party. but would it be reasonable, etiquette-wise, to ask them all to pay for their train tickets [around $20, there & back, i think], if we pay for food+entertainment? :

Don’t worry about the trains. Just figure out your route beforehand and you’ll be fine, especially in such a large group of people.

Times Square… there’s really nothing to do there. It’s crowded, all the lights will give you a headache, it’s easy to get separated… you can walk through it on your way somewhere else to see the sights, but everything there is touristy and over-priced, just not worth it.

Don’t know much about clubs, but I’m 17 and I know that for any of the decent clubs in Manhattan they would ID you, so that would be out. I would most recommend finding a nice restaurant to have dinner, perhaps taking a walk through the city to get there (5th avenue, Broadway are nice to get the overall impression). If you want something more exciting in addition to just eating find a comedy show or a drag show or just a show along with a restaurant, make sure it’s not 18+ though.

One thing that would be cool to do is rent some kind of loft or apartment or space for the evening, you can usually throw pretty awesome parties in those if you’re careful, but that will get expensive very quickly, especially since it’s a birthday thing and so you won’t be expecting your guests to put down any money for it. So food + some kind of show, or just food and a walk, would be your best option.

I think having them pay for the train is fairly reasonable, just see what the rest of your expenses are and explain it to your friends well.

haha, yeah, i think we’re going to have to follow a really strict route, so as not to get lost : P & i’m going to suggest the comedy/drag show thing to my peeps & see what they think. then, some how get my parents on board -_- lol.

you can def go to a comedy club… Last year a bunch of people went to one after junior prom.

just have a good time… don’t get so caught up in things that you make certain activities a priority or else your expectations will be too high. You might have as much fun just walking around NYC than going to a comedy club. Also, taking the train isn’t bad. I took it to meet my dad in NYC for a concert, and i was talking to this girl from Texas (probably about 20 and good looking) who was literally trembling the entire train ride because she thought the was going to get kidnapped. Also, since you’ll be in a large group it should make you feel that much more comfortable.

haha, that’s a funny story. & i get what you’re saying about being more lax, but i feel like with such a big group i need to work at being a little structured, especially since i’m so unorganized, normally : P

nyc is pretty chill for a 18th birthday. sorry i cant recommend any good places to go since i live in mass. but your 21st birthday will probably be even better lmao
