My daughter is freaking out that she just found out she got 2Bs this semester Ap cal and AP Stats , she just applied H and several other ivy’s but now she is trying to drop her AP Stats, her Gpa without this semester is 3.93/4.0uw, and her sat is 1540 and sat 2 are 750 lit and 720 us history, should she drop AP Stats or keep it?
She is a swimmer but not fast enough for recruiting Thanks
Wouldn’t the first semester grades be sent anyway even if she drops?
Her counselor said she still can drop if she wants but she already include AP Stats in her course list submitted to colleges
Why is she having a hard time in calculus? Maybe I could give you some tips.
If the B is already part of the first semester average, I imagine it would also be on the mid year report? If it’s on the mid year report I don’t think it’d make sense to drop it for the second semester.
@NASA2014 She is just not good at math or science:(
She spent tons of time on swimming and got support by some D3 schools but she still want to try some Ivy’s
@20171 I don’t know , she said counselor said she still can drop since the report cards will officially mailed out next week.
If she isn’t good at math, why is she taking two AP math classes? If she can still drop, great: she doesn’t need both. Will the transcript show a W?
She is going to ask her counselor about it tomorrow
If she drops the course (or indeed make any changes) she has to notify the colleges. Personally, I don’t see the validity in dropping a course for a B. I doubt that having a B would be a cause for rejection. Nor will dropping the class (as long as it’s replaced with something of comparable rigor. I do think that dropping a class and replacing it with nothing would look worse to Ivy League AO’s than getting a B.
If she isn’t good at math how did she get a B?
How do you know that a W wouldn’t look worse than a B?
At my school, when a student signs up for an AP course the parent and student commits to the student being in the class for the year. There is no dropping or changing of courses because schedule changes don’t happen in a vacuum, especially if there is a limited number of spots.
As Judge Judy would say “your daughter ate the steak” and got a grade for a semester of work that she did. Now you and she wants the grade removed from her transcript. I don’t think this is a good look for your school especially when it comes to academic integrity to have a policy if you don’t like a grade, you can drop and pretend it never happened.
Is this something that your high school does for every single student?
Does this mean no one ever fails a course or gets a grade below a C because they can go to the counselor and drop the class?
I would hate to endure the wrath of the parent who they don’t do this kind of thing for at your high school or the parent from another school who thinks students from your school took their spot over these types of shenanigans
How many courses is your D taking? If she’s taking 5 core subjects and drops to 4, I don’t think that’s going to look good.
Look, the odds that she’ll get into H are so slim that I wouldn’t make this decision based on how she thinks it will affect her chances of admission to H.
I think it is insane to drop a course because she got a B. A B is a good grade; a W would show that she backs down from a challenge or that she cares more about her GPA than about learning. That is not what the Ivies want to see. Tell her to keep plugging away!
A single B will not make a difference one way or another. She should keep on and try to finish strong.
Thanks for all the comments, I will try to suggest her to keep working hard the 2nd semester. She decided to apply H at last minute since she knows how hard it is but she still want to try.
If she already listed the course on her application then she would need to inform adcoms of her schedule change. I am not sure if it looks better.
Dropping a class for a lottery chance at an Ivy League school seems short sighted. I would not let one of my take a W or drop on a wing and a prayer.
The only way I would drop a course is if it would not appear on her transcript at all.
But since she has herself listed the class, the schools will know. I would not recommend dropping unless it was a situation in which she was potentially failing. I think it would look much worse on all levels to drop (ie, give up, get frustrated) over a B.
