First B in a class

Well, my daughter took her mid-term today and has come to accept that for the first time she’ll have a B on her report card (AP Euro). Kind of a shock to her and has started a discussion in the home. She’s wondering if it will really matter if she gets an A second semester and scores a 5 on her exam. She goes to a pretty competitive school and historically this particular teacher for this class does not give A’s but the students do score 5’s. What do you think?

I’d like to know as well. Thanks in advance to those who have experience/knowledge about this situation!

I’m really surprised that people don’t have an opinion on this topic

That’s the way it works at my school: If you get a 5 both semester grades are raised to an A and if you get a 4, one semester is raised to an A. I would recommend buying copies of Modern European History by Birdsall Viault and maybe Princeton Review’s book on Euro to help her with the AP test.

If it will really matter for what? College?

Depends what grade she’s in. However, one B is probably not gonna make or break an acceptance, especially in an AP class.

A single B won’t be what gets her into her targeted colleges or get her rejected. By your calculus only 4.0 students need to apply to top schools – which patently isn’t the case.

Having one B doesn’t do much. Since her report cards are filled with As, no college will see one B as a sign of laziness. In your daughter’s case, I think that class rank and ECs matter more if she applied/plans to apply top tier schools.

S has one B in a non AP class & it has not hurt his college application process at all. He has been accepted everywhere he applied & has many scholarship offers. He is top 10% in his class just barely but he has taken all honors/AP & others higher ranked with 4.0s have not had the acceptances & scholarship offers that he has had.
