1st Year Chem major willing to answer anything about UCR

Hey Guys, if you have any questions or concerns about UCR. Go ahead and ask. I had a lot of questions myself before I started my first year.

I understand that this isn’t something you would know very well

but hows engineering at riverside?

is the dropout/weeding rate as bad as it is in UC Irvine

in Irvine 70% of people doing engineering are kicked out by senior year

is it like that in riverside?

Engineering at Riverside is ranked #94 in the nation. It might not be as good as UCI engineering, but considering that engineering school has only been 20 years, I think that’s REALLY good. And it’s still growing.

I’d say dropout/weeding rate is as bad as UCI though. It might be easier than UCI to get into UCR engineering school, but it’s pretty hard to graduate with good grades, unless you study like real engineers (studying 24/7). Drop out rate is like 67%. During the orientation, I remember the professor said that only 1/3 of the people will graduate with an engineering degree. Don’t freak out though. Unless you are lazy and unmotivated, I think you’ll be fine.

Hey! So im going to be a Pre-Business major in the Fall you may not be too familiar with it but just wondering:

What do you know about the program? (how hard it is, how well people do, etc.)

Do you know of any experiences that other people have had? (are they happy with it, etc)

What is there to do for fun on campus? (parties, events, etc.)

Do you know of how good the business school is? (do people get decent jobs, do they go to good grad schools? etc)

THANK YOU!

Yea, i’m not too familiar with business, but I think I can answer your questions.

 1. I hear business program is really good at UCR. It has its own undergraduate business school (Berkeley, Irvine, and Riverside; Riverside being second best among those schools). I don’t think it’s hard though. My friend said it’s pretty easy to get A’s in business courses compared to other courses. Not sure why, but I think it’s because those classes are mainly focused on expressing your opinion through presentations.

Most business majors join lots of clubs (especially fraternity and business association clubs). Since business is all about making connections with people and the companies, I think it’s a key factor for them to join clubs. (That’s fun I think)

I think UCR throws one of the biggest frat/sor parties among the schools. Also, they have a lot of events on campus. Try to attend all the events that they offer. (Block Party, Heat, Spring Splash) because if you don’t, then there would be nothing else to do in Riverside. lol. But people at UCR are pretty chill though.

Undergrad business is ranked #67. You’ll definitely get a decent job. (Prudential, Ernst & Young, Geico, Target are major recruiters). Big 4 companies might not hire as much UCR students as USC or UCLA students, but they still hire about 5-6 UCR students every year. But it’s really competitive since it’s Big 4. Some people choose go to grad school, and others choose to get a job right after college. But it’s always good to go to grad school if you want a higher paying job.

omg thanks so much that really helped me! I feel alot more better about getting into buisness after hearing all the things you have said. I really appreciate you answering them! thanks so much! :)

I just had a couple of more questions:

How was your first year at UCR? (how did u cope with being homesick, was it easy to make friends, how did you deal with studying and having a social life etc.)

How is the East Lothian dorm? (how social are they, do they throw parties, is it diverse, etc.)

Any suggestions you have for a first year student?

Are you happy with your decision of UCR?

My first year at UCR was ok to be honest. But it depends on a person though. Some people love it, some hate it. Homesick was not a problem for me because I’m from San Bernardino County. So I had a chance to go home on weekends. But if you are from Norcal, I think you’ll get over homesickness after a few months. And you’ll make friends that you can depend on. It’s really easy to make friends if you’re in the dorm. A lot of them are chill and not snobby at all. But UCR students are also known for not studying that much compared to other schools. It can be a distraction sometimes. So it’s always best to go to library by yourself if you want to go study.

East Lothian dorm is the most popular dorm. They get filled up pretty fast. It is known for being really social, but I think it depends on the hall. Some halls are really social, and other halls are not that very social. I’m not sure about parties in the dorm, but I think they do have a few parties in the dorm. Most parties happen outside of school though. As for diversity, I think every hall is diverse, but mostly Asian people.

Get good grades, don’t get in trouble, and have fun lol. Oh and join some clubs, but not too much that will distract you from studying. There are lots of kids that only party and ended up getting kicked out of school. First Year student retention rate at this school is 86% and 14% don’t come back a year later. So it’s always essential to keep your grades up and not getting in trouble.

UCR wasn’t my first choice to be honest, but i’m definitely receiving the same quality of education as other UC schools. Academically and socially, I’m really satisfied. The only thing I wish for UCR is that they don’t accept too many unmotivated students that will end up getting kicked out of school. I wished I had friends that I can study efficiently with, but it’s pretty hard to find those kind of people because a lot of them only care about socializing and partying. You can still find motivated students, but it took some time for me.

Overall, I’m happy with my decision of UCR.

oh yeah UCR wasnt my first choice either, college admissions have been really tough this year and I just happened to really like their business program.

Is this a better option than going to SJSU?

yea, I’d say it’s a better option than going to SJSU. SJSU is actually pretty good for business and has the advantage of being near Silicon Valley. But you’ll have more opportunities with UCR business degree. Plus, it’s really hard to get classes at SJSU. It’s almost impossible in the economy these days. (Not saying that it’s easy to get classes at UCR though)

how’s the grade deflation?

how is the LGBT life at UCR? and dating life for LGBT?
